In Norway, on New Years Eve as the clock strikes midnight, we exit our houses for a celebration outdoors. Upon re-entering, we lay iron and steel across the thresholds of our doors, because evil cannot cross these metals. Coming into our houses in the new year, all evil from the past year is forced to stay behind outside, in the shivering cold.
