U Awarded $850K for Hydro-Fracking Waste Research


Larry Wackett, IPrime Biocatalysis and Biotechnology program faculty, is the leader researcher on a $600,000 federal grant exploring new technologies to reduce hydraulic fracturing pollution. The team received an additional $250K award from the U's Minnesota Futures grant program to research solutions.

DOE Funds U Nationwide Energy Centers


Energyaward.jpgThe University of Minnesota has been awarded two grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) totaling $13.1 million over the next five years to fund two nationwide centers: The Center for the Study of Charge Transfer and Charge Transport in Photoactivated Systems & The Nanoporous Materials Genome Center.


Through these centers, many IPrime faculty will have the opportunity to participate in developing new materials related to capturing greenhouse gases and improving chemical processes as well as developing methods and software tools for increasing the efficiency of solar energy conversion. NMP's Joe Zasadzinski Receives Avanti Award

Professor Joe Zasadzinski, a participating faculty of IPrime's Nanostructural Materials and Processes program was selected as the recipient of the Biophysical Society's 2013 Avanti Award.


Zasadzinski.pngHe is acknowledged for his "careful, quantitative application of physical principles of self-assembly, directed assembly and bio-mimicry to create well-controlled lipid structures for biomedical applications." The award is given annually to an investigator for outstanding contributions to our understanding of lipid biophysics.

Three IPrime faculty are included in the short list of recipients of the 2012 Distinguished McKnight University Professorships. The honor is given to recognize and reward the University of Minnesota's most outstanding mid-career faculty.
