Collaborative UMN research team develops sugar-derived copolymers for sustainable applications

Researchers in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CEMS) and Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota have created a new material that is the first bio-based block copolymer with the potential to match petroleum-based polyester elastomers and hard plastics in both cost and performance. The research was recently featured in Chemical & Engineering News. The collaborative UMN research team includes (from left to right) Chemistry Professor Marc Hillmyer, CEMS Assistant Professor Kechun Zhang, CEMS Post-Doctoral Associate Mingyong Xiong, CEMS Regents Professor Frank Bates, and Chemistry Graduate Student Deborah Schneiderman.
