Graduating seniors: Apply by Friday, March 29 to speak at commencement

You could speak at commencement

Applications are now being accepted for the student speaker at the 2013 College of Science and Engineering Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 10, 7 p.m. at Mariucci Arena.

To apply:

  • Complete and submit the Student Commencement Speaker Application. Download and print application (PDF).
  • Write and attach a one-page essay about why you want to speak at commencement. Please indicate in your essay the key talking points or themes for your commencement address.
  • Include a resume.
  • Request and attach a letter of recommendation from a College of Science and Engineering faculty member.

Return completed application, essay, resume, and recommendation letter to Laura Boche, Lind Hall, Suite 115 or email to leboche@umn.edu by Friday, March 29, 2013.

You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have excellent communication skills to be eligible to speak at commencement. You will be asked to meet with Associate Dean Paul Strykowski prior to selection.

If you are chosen to be the commencement speaker, you will be awarded a monetary award of $500. The student speaker at commencement is expected to speak for about 8-10 minutes. Please prepare accordingly.
