May 14 - June 2, 2012
Professor and Civil Engineering Department Head Roberto Ballarini is once again leading this popular global seminar to Italy. The purpose of this class is to explore the development of structures and building materials in Italy from Roman times to the present. Instructors and guest lecturers from Italian universities will present fundamentals of material behavior, structural mechanics, and design methods. Under the guidance of local engineers and faculty, students will visit numerous ancient and modern sites to highlight innovations in construction materials, form, and monitoring. Strong local contacts assure "insider" site visits and tours well beyond the normal tourist access.
Travel across Northern Italy will be highlighted by stays in Rome, Florence, Milan, and Venice; participants also will see Verona, Pisa, and the Cinque Terre. The influence of culture, art and security on the technological developments will be emphasized.
