To the victor go the spoils

It was a fierce battle of the bots, the tension was literally palpable. Each team competed in two to four rounds, head to head against another teams. In the end team Tex come out victorious. For their glorious win, Armin gave everyone one team Tex a Swiss army knife. There is a video of the entire competition, so as soon as I can get a hold of a copy I will post that to a new blog.

It's alive!!!

In two days it will be a battle royal between the robots of mechatronics 2013! An event that will pit team against team, bot against bot, in an all out robot rover RUUUMMMBBBBLLLE! and by brawl I mean the robots will pick up pay loads and return them to their base while respectfully avoiding the other robots.

Weekend road trip

It was another successful weekend of traveling around Switzerland. First we stopped in Bern, before spending the night in Geneva. The next day we visited CERN, and went to Zermatt. Sunday before coming back we went to the top of the Gornergrat.

Physicist

Today during class we had a guest physicist give a short lecture. The idea was to get us prepared for the trip to visit CERN this weekend. His lecture started with Nicolaus Copernicus and his propagation of the heliocentric model of the universe.

Our first couple days

It has been a fun couple of days getting acclimated to the Switzerland program. Everyone seems to be making new friends, and having a blast playing with Legos. Our Swiss friends have even been kind enough to take us to some of the local hang outs and show us around.

'Top Hat and Tails' Week (Frackwoche)

The University here is in session: this is the last week of their term, with exams beginning next week. The tradition here is for seniors to grow their beards and dress up in top hat, tails, and walking sticks. The girls dress up in beautiful turn of the century ballroom gowns. Not a lot of studying for these seniors - they're all enjoying themselves.

Down to Business

We've moved into our classroom and settled down to work. Our challenge is to build an autonomous robot that will land on the surface of Mars, collect samples, and return them to the landing zone. right now we're building robots, experimenting with sensors, and learning to program in RobotC.

Adjunct associate professor Frank Kelso (mechanical engineering) will lead this seminar for juniors and seniors interested in product design and development. Based at the Zürich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, the program is a specialized, concise course in mechatronics--complex systems, composed of mechanical components, computers, and sensors.
