Microsoft and Symantec AntiVirus for Students end June 30

June 30 is the final date that students will be able to purchase or upgrade Microsoft Office or Windows Operating System upgrades, or download Symantec Antivirus software, through the University of Minnesota's contracts. Due to dramatically reduced student purchases over the past few years and the availability of products like Office365 and Google Apps, it is no longer cost-effective for the University to continue these contracts.

Microsoft Products:
Students can continue to use previously purchased MIcrosoft licenses through June 30, 2014. After that date the software will need to be uninstalled. Students that graduate on or before June 30, 2014 will maintain their licenses indefinitely. Students who have purchased extended access to their product key and image download through Kivuto will continue to have such access until their extended access expiration date. After that date, students can still find great discounts on these and many more Microsoft products directly from Microsoft.

Symantec Products:
Students who have downloaded and installed Symantec prior to June 30 can continue to use it indefinitely at the most recent version downloaded. They will be able to receive updates for that version through the end of that product's life, which Symantec estimates to be roughly through 2017. However, to upgrade to a new version, students will need to purchase their own license direct from Symantec. Alternately, students may opt to intall one of these free options recommended by University IT:


  • Sophos for Mac

  • Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP and Windows 7

  • Windows Defender for Windows 8

New Adobe Student Prices

Adobe is discontinuing the Student/Teacher Software title model. Starting June 7, 2013, they are moving to a card activation system. Students will buy a card for their Adobe software and it will be activated by UMD Stores.

A new option is a "Cloud" subscription - a 12 month subscription to any and all Adobe products for $29.99/month ($359.88 annual purchase). The subscription must be renewed every 12 months. The Cloud subscription includes automatic upgrades and access to all Adobe products for 12 months from the time of activation.

Perpetual licenses will still be available as well, although the prices have increased significantly:

  • Design and Web Premium $599.00 (old price was $349.00)
  • Production Premium $599.00 (old price was $349.00)
  • Design Standard $449.00 (old price was $199.00)
  • Photoshop Extended $349.00 (old price was $169.00)
  • Dreamweaver $149.00 (old price was $119.00)
  • Acrobat Pro $119.00 (old price was $55.00)
