Internet Protocol (IP) phones are increasingly being deployed across UMD.
ITSS continues with the process of upgrading our phone sets across campus. We are moving from digital phones to IP phones in buildings where wiring and network equipment have been upgraded to allow for this technology. In new or rewired buildings we are saving on wiring costs as the IP phones share a network connection with your computer, eliminating the need to pull separate wires for phones to each location.
We currently have 588 IP phones on campus, or roughly 25% of our almost 2400 existing office phones. In conjunction with a rewiring project in the School of Medicine to provide faster network speeds, we will be replacing about 200 phones this spring. We are working with Labovitz School of Business and Economics staff to develop a plan for upgrades in LSBE this summer.
