AD SCCM: Java 6 update 45

Oracle Java 6 update 45 will be available as an optional installer for UMD AD/SCCM clients on 5/1/2013.

If you require Java 6, you should install this update if at all possible. Java 6 is "officially" out of support, but the vendor has continued to release public updates to fix security problems.

Power Management for AD Computers

SCCM power management provides a set of tools and resources that we can use to manage and monitor the power consumption of computers on Active Directory. We are currently using these tools in several areas to power off computers at the end of the work day. It can also be used to enforce power management settings on a collection of computers. There are specific hardware requirements for some of the settings.

If you have a need for this type of service, please contact the ITSS Help Desk (726-8847, itsshelp@d.umn.edu) to open a work ticket and request additional information.

AD SCCM: Updates for Flash, Firefox, Thunderbird, Oracle

The following updates will be deployed to UMD AD/SCCM client computers beginning today:

  • Adobe Flash Player 11.5.502.146 Active-X (IE)
  • Adobe Flash Player 11.5.502.146 Plugin (Firefox)
  • Mozilla Firefox 10.0.12 ESR
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 10.0.12 ESR
In addition to deploying updates to machines with prior versions of the software, these installers are also available through Run Advertised programs to install manually on computers that may not already have the software installed.
  • Oracle Java 6 update 38
This update is only available as an optional installer. Users should install at their earliest convenience as long as they don't have conflicts with software that requires an older version of Java. Before installing, close all browsers and any other Java software.

AD SCCM: Cisco AnyConnect VPN, Google Drive added

Cisco AnyConnect Client and Google Drive are now available for Windows AD/SCCM computers as optional installers. These two software packages have been problematic for end users to install as they required administrative rights. However, as SCCM packages, users will not need elevated access rights to install.

Additionally, for University computers previously joined to AD and running SCCM, these two software packages can be installed from any network, which will allow users to install the software while connected to their home networks or while traveling if needed.

Cisco AnyConnect Client is recommended for computers that access or store private University data. Google Drive allows users to sync files from the desktop to their Google Drive space.

AD SCCM: Out-of-band Microsoft security patch released

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) released an out-of-band patch from Microsoft on Saturday to fix a serious issue with Internet Explorer which was already seeing exploits in the wild. (Microsoft patches are generally released on a monthly basis only).

This security patch will be deployed to all UMD AD/SCCM clients/workstations, and does require a reboot. Users will receive the System Restart Required notice and will have four hours to complete the restart before it occurs automatically.

AD SCCM: Symantec scans changed to monthly

Effective September 13, ITSS staff have adjusted the policy for UMD Managed Symantec EndPoint (SEP) 11 clients to require a monthly scan instead of a weekly scan. The change was made as SEP 11 performs more effective live scanning than previous versions, and the monthly scans will be less intrusive.

The change will apply to Managed clients the next time there is a policy update on the computer (generally, when you restart your computer). Users will still have the ability to pause or cancel the scan, but ITSS highly recommends users let it run to completion at least monthly.

If your computer is still running a weekly scan or you are unable to pause/cancel the scan, you are likely running an older client downloaded from the OIT web site. If your computer is on AD and using SCCM, you can upgrade to the UMD Managed client and have the benefits of our customized package. For details on installing software on AD computers, see: Installing software.

Update (10.2.12): The scans are scheduled for 5:00 pm on the 28th of each month. If your computer is off at that time, the scan will start the next time the computer is powered on.
