ITSS By The Numbers: Desktop Team

The ITSS Desktop Team improves planning and delivery of desktop support services for UMD faculty, staff and students, helping them to be successful and independent in their work with electronic information and computing applications.

From July 1 through December 31, 2012, the ITSS Desktop Team resolved 1300 requests for assistance, which came in through the ITSS Help Desk.

ITSS By The Numbers: The Web Team

The ITSS Web Team develops and facilitates development of accurate, well organized, and accessible technical documentation and other written information in support of ITSS and other UMD organizations.

From July 1 through December 31, 2012, the ITSS web site:

  • received 35,140 visitors
  • offered 186,449 page views

From September 4 through November 30, 2012, the ITSS Facebook site:

  • was visited by people in the USA, UAE, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and others
  • was liked by people in the USA, UAE, China, Hong Kong, Australia, United Kingdom, India, and others.

ITSS By the Numbers: Help Desk

The ITSS Help Desk is the primary contact for the information technology problem reporting and technical assistance needs of the UMD campus community. The Help Desk serves as a liaison between our customers and the ITSS technical staff, monitoring and coordinating solutions to customer needs. Help Desk staff strive to ensure customer satisfaction by providing prompt, courteous, and effective support.

From January 1 through June 30, 2012, the team:

  • answered 10,124 phone calls.
  • created 6,862 tickets and resolved 4,601 problems at the Help Desk.
  • answered 76 calls per day on average and 202 on the highest-volume day.

The ITSS Training Team improves planning, marketing, and delivery of technology training for faculty, staff, and students on the UMD campus.

From January 1 through June 30, 2012, the team offered:

  • 29 training sessions, including 16 workshops, 6 Technology Tuesdays at Two Events, 3 eClasses, and 4 Twin Cities sponsored sessions at UMD
  • 9 new sessions, including 5 Technology Tuesdays at Two events and 4 Twin Cities sponsored sessions at UMD
  • sessions for 266 participants with an overall satisfaction level of 3.8 out of 4

New Format for Tech Camp 16

Further Tech Camp Information

For further information please consult our Tech Camp Web site.

Twenty-two faculty members will be embarking on a new format for Tech Camp - a 10 week, online experience based on the standards for a two credit class. This means they will be devoting approximately five hours a week to Tech Camp.

All of the Tech Camp participants are developing one or more online courses to be taught during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Tech Camp runs from February 11, 2013 to April 28, 2013.

ITSS By The Numbers: Student Supervision Team

The ITSS Student Supervision Team provides support for ITSS supervisors of student employees, including producing written material to clarify the roles of student employees and the policies and practices of student supervision. The team promotes the most efficient and equitable environment for students to provide excellent service and benefit from a great work experience.

ITSS Student Employees

From January 1 through June 30, 2012, the team reported:

  • 63.5 student employees
  • 35 student employees worked in the Tech Center
  • 10 student employees worked in the Multimedia Hub
  • 8 student employees worked in Computer Maintenance
  • 3.5 student employees worked at the Help Desk
  • The remaining students worked in Desktop Support, the ITSS Office, Phone/Net Support, and as programmers.

ITSS By The Numbers: Student Computing Team

The ITSS Student Computing Team designs, implements, manages and improves ITSS-funded student computing areas, which include Macintosh and Windows full access labs, and Windows and Macintosh general access computing areas. The team also assists in the daily management of and develops policies and procedures for these areas.

From January 1 through June 30, 2012, the team reported:

  • 10,938 students served
  • 174 general-access computers and 416 full-access computers
  • 529,761 pages printed
  • 93 problem tickets resolved

ITSS By The Numbers: Faculty Technology Team

The ITSS Faculty Technology Team provides support for faculty, enabling them to use technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research as well as encouraging them to model effective and ethical use of technology for their students.

From January 1 through June 30, 2012, the team reported:

  • 930 attendees and 74 presenters at TechFest 2012
  • 794 class grade books kept in eGradebook
  • 704 course sites kept in Moodle
  • 182 classes using centralized exam scoring

ITSS By The Numbers: Security Team

The ITSS Security Team addresses the many security concerns ranging from systems, network, end user workstations, credit card processing, and forensics. The team recommends and evaluates policy and procedures, establishes preventative techniques, and manages incident detection and response.

From July 1 through December 31, 2011, the team reported:

  • 273 complaints about copyright violations (DMCA notices)
  • 637 reports of computers infected with malware
  • 8 firewall instances maintained for specific customer sub-networks
  • 299 servers scanned monthly
  • 78 devices that view credit card information and must be held to the highest security requirements
