Display of the Digital Equipment @ Library

The UMC Library has a wide variey of digital equipment for loan to students. Some fun items you might not be aware of include: Audio Technica AT-LP2D USB turntable is LP-to-digital recording system, a Wacom Tablet and a Alesis MultiMix USB Mixer with Integrated USB port..

This is in addition to the digital cameras, videorecorders, and scanners that most know about. The entire list is at Library Digital Equipment page.

Newly Available Search Tools

OCLC, the service most libraries in the US use for cataloging, has made several search databases available to the users through ELM the Electronic Library for Minnesota. These are very specific to type of material.

These databases search OCLC for materials catalogued by libraries of the following types: Conference Papers, Proceedings of Conferences, and Dissertations and Theses. Millions of records. These databses are generally to locate materials for interlibrary loan.

Flu? Missing class? The Library has Digital Voice Recorders

The Library has two Two Olympus Digital Voice Recorders VS 100 available for student use. These record audio in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. They can be directly plugged into the usb port on your computer for uploading. The files can be posted on the web as well.

Baby Sign & First Sign - Teaching American Sign

UMC Library has Baby Signing Time! and Signing Time! videos and related audio CDs and board books The videos combine signing children and infants, animation and music, and an adult to model each sign. Teaches young children to sign before they can speak. Includes concepts like day, night, hungry, bread, happy, and sad. The audio CD's and board books supplement the videos.

Check out New Books

UMC Library puts new books on display on the first floor of the Library Currently there are four themes: Marketing Plans - International Etiquitte - Green Jobs - Women's Equality Day.
These books are available for checkout and in fact this public display has been a boon to our circulation.

List of Children's Books - IDEA Grant

The UMC Library received a grant from the University of Minnesota office for Equity and Diversity. The focus of this grant was to develop a children's book collection emphasizing different aspects of diversity. We made a web page with a list of the books purchased with this grant. It is alphabetical by author. The book covers are included so it is quite colorful.

New Preschool Online Resources

UMC Library provides two online resources for use with preschool and early elementary children.

Britannica Preschool Learning Zone is a classroom-tested, interactive learning environment designed specifically for the needs of ages 4 to 7.

Kids InfoBits is Gale's database designed for students in kindergarten through grade five. Complete with a developmentally appropriate graphic interface and quality reference content Kids InfoBits addresses the way kids learn and conduct research.

Ebsco Animals - Encyclopedia of Animals online

Ebsco Animals is a database with thousands of easy-to-read entries about mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Each entry begins with a simple category breakdown of the animal including Kingdom, Class, Order, Genus & Species, and Geographical Locale as well as a detailed description. Many entries include colorful images. Based on the print resource Encyclopedia of Animals.

New - Points of View Reference Center

Points of View Reference Center
from Ebsco is a full-text database consisting of a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. The database provides 255 topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (argument), counterpoint (opposing argument), and a Critical Thinking Guide on the topic.

A good source for speech topics.

New - Clase/Periodica

Clase/Periodica is an OCLC database which is part of ELM, the statewide database purchase program

Clase and Periodica are two separate databases that are available as a single standalone database.

CLASE indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities.

PERIODICA covers journals specializing in science and technology.

Professional Development Collection - Education

Professional Development Collection is a collection created for education research. It includes the full text of more than 500 quality education journals and other resources.

The database is FindIt finditsmall.gif enabled.

This database is part of the ELM collection. It is part of the increased emphasis on education research and K - 12 resources.

PRINT JOURNALS LIST UPDATED

The UMC Library maintains a database of its print journals and magazines. The 2009 version is available as a printed booklet and online. The list includes information about whether a journal is scholarly (from Ulrich's Periodicals Directory) and if it is available online. It also indicates if back issues are available at the Library as microfilm or microfiche.

The UMC Library Print Periodicals booklet has been distributed to faculty. The remaining booklets are held at the Library Circulation Desk for use by faculty, students and staff. If you need a copy see Krista Proulx at the Library.

The online version is linked from the Library Website's Periodicals page as UMC Print Periodicals List. The Crookston Catalog - On Campus Materials has records for current print periodical titles and information about the individual issues

August 26th - Women's Equality Day

August 26 is designated as Women's Equality Day. The date commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment which gave U.S. women full voting rights. The UMC Library has a bright colorful display in the window at the entrance of the Library. There are posters and books from the children's collection and the library general collection on various aspects of women's equality and progress.

New Health Related Databases from Ebsco

UMC faculty, staff and students have access to four new health and medical related databases. They are part of the ELM statewide databases.


  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic provides access to nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Coverage of nursing and allied health topics.

  • Alt HealthWatch focuses on health issues from the perspective of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.

  • Ebsco's Consumer Health Complete is designed to be a comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health content. It is intended to support the information needs of patients, and to foster an overall understanding of health-related topics.

  • Ebsco's Health Source: Consumer Edition a collection of consumer health information. This resource provides access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines.
