New Children's Online Resources - Ebsco Primary Search

Ebsco Primary Search, designed specifically for elementary school libraries and public library children's rooms, contains full-text for nearly 70 popular, elementary school magazines. All full-text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). In addition to the full-text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 100 magazines. Examples of publications covered in Primary Search include: Appleseeds, Boy's Life, Cobblestone, Cricket, Highlights for Children, Hopscotch, Jack & Jill, Ladybug, Ranger Rick, Science World, Spider, SuperScience, Time for Kids, Turtle, and many more. This database also provides the American Heritage Children's Dictionary, 3rd Edition from Houghton Mifflin, and an Image Collection of photos, maps and flags.

Biography Resource Center

This database contains biographies from many Gale sources supplemented by full-text articles from hundreds of magazines and newspapers, as well as tens of thousands of images and links to vetted websites.

Search for people---both current and historic from all eras and fields of endeavor---based on name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, birth/death dates and places, or gender, as well as keyword and full text. You can combine search criteria to create a custom search.

EBSCO's GreenFILE™

GreenFILE™
offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,700 Ebsco had made this database available without charge.

The UMC Library's FindIT linking service links citations to the text of many of the journal articles.

The results are catagorized as being topic overviews ie Truth in Memoirs or Chic-Lit and, author overviews, and work overviews. These are scholarly detailed and lengthy.

The search capability is excellent and the interface for navigating in the documents works.

State and Federal Income Tax forms are in

The UMC Library participates in the Minnesota, North Dakota and Federal library tax forms deposit program. These forms are kept next the Library Circulation desk. Generally there are packets, forms and instructions booklets as well as selected individual income forms.

World Higher Education Database

The UMC Library subscribes to the print version of International Handbook of Univerties 2009. This newly revamped print publication is now two volumes and weighs nearly 10 pounds. This subscription includes access to the World Higher Education database. Both cover over 17,000 higher education institutions in 183 countries. The online database has an easy-to-use interface which can be searched on a variety fields.

* A description of the education system and credentials of 183 countries

Children's Center helped with Thanksgiving Display

In what is becoming a Thanksgiving tradition the Children's Center created art in the form of colorful turkeys. The children come to see their art displayed in the Library Display window. The UMC Library takes pictures of the children's work and posts the images on the Library website for the parents to see.

UMC Library training Crookston Schools Students

The UMC Library is working with the Crookston Public Schools to train students in the use of online resources for Academic Research. The training includes the use of the ELM (Electronic Library for Minnesota) resources.

Gale has added three additional databases to the UMC Subscriptions:

GeneralScince Collection -

A collection of over 200 journals, providing researchers with the information needed to stay current on the latest scientific developments

Educator's Reference Complete

A collection of more than 450 full-text academic journals, hundreds of full-text reports, and many premier reference sources. Included content focuses on educational principles, child development and psychology, and best practices in education

Student Resource Center

A collection of more than 1,100 full-text periodicals and newspapers, primary sources, creative works, and multimedia. The content is based on national curriculum standards covering all core curriculum areas, including history, literature, science, social studies, and more. Includes Lexile reading levels for periodicals, an integrated national and state curriculum standards search with content correlated to the standards.

New Full Text Historical Newspapers

The UMC Library now has access to a valuable historical collection of full text newspapers. These are a part of the Gale Digital Collections. These provide rare, formerly inaccessible historical content from the world’s most prestigious libraries to UMC faculty, researchers and students. They may be searched by keyword. The search terms are highlighted and you can retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. These collections include:

The Times Digital Archive 1785 - 1985 Complete digital edition of The Times (London). The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.

17th and 18th Century Burney Collection The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757 - 1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media. The 700 or so bound volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, however there are also some English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies, Europe and India.

19th Century British Library Newspapers

19th Century British Library Newspapers contains full runs of 48 influential national and regional newspapers representing different political and cultural segments of the 19th century British society.

Nineteenth Century U.S. Newspapers

With digital facsimile images of both full pages and clipped articles for hundreds of 19th century U.S. newspapers and advanced searching capabilities, researchers will be able to research history in ways previously unavailable. For each issue, the newspaper is captured from cover-to-cover, providing access to every article, advertisement and illustration.

The Economist Historical Archive is also available to UMC Library users. The Economist Historical Archive 1843-2003 The Economist Historical Archive 1843-2003 ('EHA') is the fully searchable complete facsimile edition of The Economist, the weekly paper which is essential reading for anyone engaged in politics, current affairs and all aspects of business and trade worldwide.

MLA International Bibliography

MLA International Bibliography MLA indexes material that relates to all forms of human communication. Topics include literary criticism (authors, titles, themes) and literary theory, dramatic arts (film, radio, television, theater), and history of printing and publishing. Linguistics and language materials range from history and theory of linguistics, comparative linguistics, semantics, stylistics, and syntax to translation. The items indexed date back to the 1920s. The index contains over 1.8 million citations from more than 4,400 journals & series and 1,000 book publishers.

New Early Childhood Curriculum database

KCDL Online (Kraus Curriculum Development Library) is a database of curricula, frameworks, and standards that brings together educational objectives, content, instructional strategies, and evaluative techniques for all subjects covered in PreK-12. The database indexes materials for the print/microfiche collection and contains most recent materials as full text documents. Recent additions to the database are available as full text documents.
