Fire in Brazilian Nightclub Kills and Injures Hundreds

A fire that broke out early Sunday at Kiss, a Brazilian nightclub, killed at least 233 people and injured 120 more, according to news sources.
The club was packed to double its maximum capacity of 1,000 when the ceiling caught fire due to the pyrotechnic display that was part of the featured band's act. At the first sign of fire, club-goers ran to the exits in a panic. Many of the victims were trampled in the frenzy, trapped, or inhaled too much smoke, CNN reported.
According to CNN, Kiss' license for operation had expired in August, but its owners say that the club was up to date on all inspections and permits. Authorities in Santa Maria are investigating all potential reasons and suspects linked to the fire.
Many of the dead and injured were students at the Federal University of Santa Maria and were at the club celebrating the end of their summer, reports NBC News.
As reported by NBC News, the university will be closed until Feb. 1 at the earliest as students and faculty deal with this event. Mourning is evident all around Santa Maria, as the city's three cemeteries have been filled with individuals burying their family and friends. A service in the center of the city on Monday was also highly attended by citizens wishing to express their grief.
