Journals are COOL

Hey everyone. I've been thinking about the journals in between everything else I'm cramming into my brain. This has been a really amazing experience for me. I've sometimes felt out of it working so much and not really being in school more. These journals have helped me connect with all of you in a way that's really been even better than being in class. Whenever we've done a project it's been interesting to see how all of you think about the assignment. But these mini-assignments in the journals are so much more revealing to me- more rushed/raw and personal- maybe even more personal than our first project on the self. Maybe it's the idea of "journaling" that brings that out in us??? The ability to throw off a little of what we use to guard our thoughts and first attempts at making things look good? These little books have been therapeutic for me. I used to feel like I was no good at collaging or maybe more reserved about putting down initial ideas on paper for other people to see. The more I do in these little books, the more I feel comfortable "sketching." Ange and I were talking the other day- Ange, not to worry- I cleaned my house in record time. . . She was commenting on how these pages can be the beginnings of something more. I agree, and I hope we'll take something from this project with us- whether it's our journals to look at from time to time, photos of our pages to use in later projects, or just a thought that sticks with us. I'm planning to photograph my pages tonight- hopefully. I also plan on journaling more. This has been a cool way to connect with all of you. . . maybe we can continue this in some way after class is over. Thanks for the experience!

I just agree up and down with this comment, Julie. I feel a bit wistful that the class is coming to an end soon, too, because to be perfectly honest, this has been a great group of students to work with and really ideal environment for sharing and creating and just building rapport. Seriously, in 3 years, I can't think of a more enjoyable class at McNeal. My only regret is that we were able to meet just once a week, and it has flown by too quickly. I propose that if nothing more we keep the blog rolling, keeping in touch that way, keep suggesting new things to check out, keep comparing thoughts and hopefully, meeting up in person.

Hey I second the comment. I feel like the first journals I entered were really rushed and it wasn't until doing a couple that I really started to crack into it. Now that I only have two left, I feel like the creative juices have only just started to flow! I would love to keep the journals going. This is something we can maybe use the "cross departments" meeting to utilize. I'm imagining an experimental college--one of the classes could be the journal pass. I'd be happy to keep meeting on Thursday nights (maybe just once or twice a month) to go to different lectures and art openings and such like we were doing at the beginning of the semester. And passing journals along. LIke I said, I have two journals left to enter and I just want to keep them and savor them... don't worry Kristin and Carrie, I won't! I'll get them to you.
