--Looking at pictures and looking at things--
By this essay, the author is trying to explain the process of perception under visual environment. From my understanding, the article can be divided to two parts. For the first part, the author illuminates his claim that pictures play much better in making people believe than words would. Here’s his demonstration line:
“Represent something (props in games of make-believe)—
—pictures—visual—(depiction) natural—analogous to looking at things (3 points)—always more to be found
—words—verbal—(description) conventional—no looking at things—can be finished
For the second part, he is discussing on “reading pictures, contrasting the fictional world and the real world, then, discussing on some different pictorial styles. I definitely agree on the author’s statement that “pictures make much better props in visual games of make-believe than verbal would. However, I found it most valuable about the author’s argument on the difference between different styles of pictorial works “has to do not with what fictional truths are generated, but with the manner in which they are generated, and the effect that that has on our visual games of make-believe. Narrow this down to, say, graphic design work, different characters will create different works. However, we as designers should always firstly be clear with how we want viewers understand our works. Also, remember that there is always more to be found in our design works, so, never try to limit any possibilities.
