Day Twenty-Two

Yoga & Lifting
I did my usual sun salutations today. I need to start adding a few more things in, especially to open up my hips. I also had a great leg workout and ran around shooting baskets.

Jujutsu
I did some rolls and practiced Atemi & Knife and Gun Defense I had learned from Wednesday.

Day Twenty-One

Yoga & Lifting
My yoga form is getting really tight and smooth and feels really good. Today's triceps and chest workout was excellent. I added weight and/or reps at every station.

Jujutsu
Last night we went over Atemi (strikes at specific vulnerable areas), Knife and Gun Defense techniques and a little bit of realistic ground work (for self defense as opposed to sport Judo). I learned a lot and will be writing in my notebook today. I am really being exposed to a lot of stuff that will be on my Shodan test on a regular basis.

Days Nineteen & Twenty

Yoga and Lifting
I did the usual yoga, biceps back and legs for lifting. Good solid work.

Jujutsu
None. But I will be in class tonight.

February 25, 2008

Days Sixteen, Seventeen & Eighteen

Yoga
I skipped yoga one day prior to lifting because I couldn't find an open place to do it. It made a huge difference and not a good one.

Lifting
I had an excellent triceps, chest and shoulder workout today.

Jujutsu
Friday it was just one Sensei and me. We got through the following lists: all Goshin, all Shime, all Nage, 1-10 Oku. We even had time for some ground work at the end. Excellent class! Today I visualized my Shodan exam between sets while lifting and pictured myself performing perfect techniques.

Day Fifteen

Yoga and Lifting
Good yoga session today. I seem to be a lot more flexible than I was. It shows during Jujutsu.
Lifting was a bit rough during bench press, but then got better and turned out to be a good triceps, chest and shoulder workout.

Jujutsu
At practice last night I got through all of the Nage list, the second half of Yawara and the first two thirds of Goshin. I need to remember not to rise up on a number of my techniques - it is like I am winding up on them unnecessarily. I also had a few fine points that i will write into my notebook today. This morning I used a kappo technique to stop my daughter's bloody nose and it worked very well!

Day Fourteen

Yoga and Lifting
Good Sun Sals and great leg workout today. I am pretty much recovered from the soreness of a weekend Jujutsu clinic... just in time for practice tonight.

Jujutsu
I studied my notebook this morning and will be doing some writing at home this afternoon. Tonight is practice. My goal is to memorize all technique names I currently have in my notebook and start making notebook progress on more techniques that were not there.

February 19, 2008

Day Thirteen

Yoga and Lifting
I did biceps and back today. I also did the usual 10 sun salutations. All went well.

Jujutsu
I read through Yawara, Nage and part of Goshin lists. I did some visualization of techniques and memorization of technique names.

February 18, 2008

Days Ten - Twelve

Yoga
I did my ten Sun Salutations every day plus some Triangles to loosen up my lower back.

Lifting
This morning I did triceps and chest, but with no real rest day over the weekend I was pretty tired and sore. I pushed through and made some progress, but not my best day in the weight room.

Jujutsu
Saturday and Sunday I attended the Winter clinic. It was an opportunity to learn techniques from a Professor and practice with several black belts and brown belts from the region and from as far away as New York and California. I learned several new things and got new insight into some things I already knew. I also was able to participate in a mock Shodan test. Excellent weekend, but I am sore and tired. This morning I read my notebook and for the next two days I will be writing and capturing as much as I can in my notes.

February 15, 2008

Day Nine

Yoga and Lifting
I am doing a little more advanced stuff in Yoga and feeling very good after doing it. Today I lifted very aggressively, again. I am in a groove and really building. Today was biceps and back.

Jujutsu
I worked on my notebook writing in critiques from Wednesday night class. I will have a formal critiques and tips section with every entry.

February 14, 2008

Day Eight

Yoga, Lifting
The 10 sun salutations felt really good this morning. I also did half a dozen of them prior to Jujutsu class last night. Lifting was excellent today. I am a solid four weeks into serious and regular lifting and I am really seeing gains in weight and reps.

Jujutsu
Last night was an excellent class. One Sensai went through the Yawara list with me and offered a lot of critique. The other did the same with Nage. A couple of themes I noticed were that I was not putting my base foot on the center line of Uke's body and that I was using my upper body to do the throws instead of my core / hips. I'll be going through my notebook and jotting down everything I can remember at lunch today.

February 13, 2008

Day Seven

Yoga and Lifting
I did my usual ten sun salutations. I lifted legs today and was able to push up weight and reps and felt really good. I decided to run around and shoot some baskets for a while to loosen up my legs after lifting and for some strange reason I was hitting three pointers like crazy.

Jujutsu
I did all 20 basic Yawara. I reviewed and visualized all 20 Nage. I have been managing to do about half an hour to an hour of notebook work over my lunch hours and I will do that again today. So far it has been mostly cleaning up text, re-formatting, etc. Once I have that done, I'll be writing up new techniques from Friday nights and I'll be re-writing what I have by reviewing a technique each day or two. The whole notebook thing works really well for me. My Jujutsu memory is almost back online.

February 12, 2008

Day Six

Yoga
I did 10 Sun Salutations and the breathing is getting to be really natural for me.

Lifting
I was able to push up weights doing biceps and back today. Very good workout. Ten pullups at the end to really blast the biceps.

Jujutsu
Yesterday I worked on my notebook quite a bit to get it cleaned up and organized. It had been in WordPerfect and not very well organized for reference. Now I have adapted it to a word doc with a better index and in the AJJF order. I still have more to do, because I am cleaning up the text as I go. This morning I did the Genkotsu list up through 15. I basically repeated the name of the technique and did it on the right and left side with an imaginary Uke. If I do this every morning, I will have these techniques back in my immediate memory very quickly and consistently.

February 11, 2008

Day 5

Yoga
I did the usual ten sun salutations but with correct breathing.

Lifting
I did a heavy triceps chest and shoulders workout. Very good. Bench and other weights are moving up.

Jujutsu
I did some reading in my notebook. Tonight I will do more work on it and my goal is to have done every technique that I know and work on memorizing names again prior to each class. This will also help me figure out the gaps where I need to continue my notebook.

Day 4

Yoga
I had an extended yoga lesson from my wife today. She helped me correct some things I was doing wrong with breathing and she added some forms to my list. It was very good.

Lifting
Today was a light day for legs so I did 70 lunges up and down the gymnastic mat with dumbells (spread across three sets). It really blasted my legs.

Jujutsu
I taught the kids rolls and falls. They did very well. I also did some reading and organizing work in my notebook.

February 09, 2008

Day 3

Yoga and leg workout later this morning.

Jujutsu
Last night I went to the advanced class. I had read through my notebook for about an hour trying to visualize and recall techniques. Warmup for the advanced class is quickly going through the 20 Yawara techniques and then the 20 Nage (throws). This went surprisingly well for me. I have remembered things more quickly and clearly than I had even hoped.

Next we did an exercise with 4 on 1 combat at slow speed. It was very fun and very tiring. Finally, we started from the end of the Goshin list and worked backwards. I got through those techniques pretty well. It is a real privilege for me to be able to work out with 4 black belts. This weekend I will be working on my notebook, adding some finer points the Sensai shared with me and adapting them into the AJJF format, which I got from that website.

February 08, 2008

Day 2

Yoga
Ten Sun Salutations as usual today. I was pretty stiff and sore from all of the falls in Wednesday's Jujutsu practice so this felt great this morning.

Lifting
I did biceps and back. I pushed up the weight on curls and did 10 pull ups at the end of the workout for a complete blowout. It was a really good workout. I also did a bunch of running/dribbling/shooting basketball to loosen up and get some cardio.

Jujutsu
Today I will locate my old electronic files of my notebook and start working them into a new notebook. I already found and looked over my paper notebook. I think if I re-read and format this stuff it will really help jog my memory on the techniques. Tonight is the advanced class, so I'll be reading my Gojin and Shime this afternoon to prepare.

February 07, 2008

Day One

Yoga
Last night was my first night back to Jujutsu. The 10 sun salutations I did this morning were fantastic and I really needed them to recover. I think the past three weeks of lifting weights has been a much better experience because I have also been doing yoga each day.

Lifting
I did triceps and chest today. It was a very solid workout, but I had used much energy last night and I found I back-slid in bench press just slightly today and had to work hard to maintain in the rest of the workout.

Jujutsu
Last night was my first practice in 10 years or so. I had looked over my notebook a bit this past week. I was able to remember almost everything to do the list of 20 Yawara. The 25 or so Goshin list was a bit less solid, but I remembered maybe 85%. I also managed to work in about 17 or 18 of the 20 throws from the Nage list and they felt solid. The workout was tremendous and the last half hour of ground work really did me in. This first class confirmed my decision to come back and I feel as though it won't take long to get back to the level I was when I left.
