Have you been looking for an opportunity to learn more about a wide variety of Google Tools, but thought that with all that Google has to offer it would take way too much time?

Well wait no more, hop on board the Google train! Come to the Office of Information Technology's Pecha Chuka:Google @ UMN.

In this Pechu Chuka 10 presenters will each get 20 slides at 20 seconds per slide to talk about a wide variety of Google Tools. Topics covered will include Google Books, Google Reader, the UMN Google Apps, Google Wave and more.

I'll be presenting with Information Literacy Librarian Kate Peterson on Using Google for Research.

It will be a fast-paced introduction to a wide variety of interesting tools!

The event is being held in Coffman Union in the Mississippi Room on this Wednesday (December 2, 2009) from 2:00-4:00.

The event will also be broadcast over UM Connect. Those who attend in person will be able to participate in a post-pechu chuka question and answer discussion with presenters.

Changes To Google Scholar

If you've accessed Google Scholar in the past few days you may have noticed some changes.

New Google Scholar.jpg

For those of you new to Google Scholar--it's a Google search engine that allows you to search for scholarly material. And they've now added the ability to include patents in the search results in Google Scholar.

Google also has a search engine that searches only patents and patent applications at Google Patents.

To learn more about the changes you might want to read this blog post.

If you're interested in learning more about some of Google's uses for research check out the new online version of the Walter Library Workshop: Google for Researchers. (Note: The workshop is still in beta--if you have any feedback feel free to send me an email or leave a comment below.)

And don't forget when using Google Scholar to link it to the University of Minnesota's rich online journal collection.
