Get Organized with Mendeley

This hands-on class will cover how to use the free software Mendeley to better organize and access your electronic article library. Mendeley can automatically locate, rename, and organize your PDFs. It can even create bibliographies in any of hundreds of styles.

In January 2011, the National Science Foundation (NSF) began requiring a data management plan for all new grant proposals. This workshop, geared toward graduate students, faculty and researchers, will provide an overview of the questions to consider when creating a data management plan with a focus on data preservation issues and tools for sharing your data, like subject-based repositories. This computer policy change will only affect guest users. That is users who are not currently affiliated with the University as students, staff or faculty.

Starting next week (I believe the start date is currently set for Tuesday, July 19) guest users will need to stop at a service desk to sign up for a guest account to use library computers in Walter Library. Guest/Community users will be limited to 2 hours of computer usage a day.

Students, faculty and staff should not encounter any change in their computer using experience here at Walter.

Alumni are considered Guest Users.

Just a heads up on this change in policy.

There are some options (such as subscribing to Special Borrowing Privileges Access Friends of the Library) to gain more access.

RefWorks recently launched an updated version, RefWorks 2.0. RefWorks 2.0 is now available to our students, faculty and staff. If you already have a RefWorks Account and want to upgrade it's easy--just click on the RefWorks 2.0 link in the top right of your account screen.

The change is largely cosmetic...changing the RefWorks interface from:

There is also a new feature offered by RefWorks to facilitate collaboration, RefShare. Refshare allows sharing of citations with others regardless of their university affiliation.

Refshare is available now.

The classic interface of RefWorks will eventually go away...once we have an exact timeline I'll share it here. But upgrading will have to occur at some point.

The University Libraries recently purchased the online backfile of the conference proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineering going back to the mid-1800s up through the 20th century. That means that these historic Civil Engineering documents are now available to you without coming into the library--you can access them anywhere that you do research, as long as you've linked to the University Libraries through authenticating at www.lib.umn.edu (just like all of our other online resources).

These papers should also appear via FindIt...so if you find one of these articles when searching Engineering Village or Google Scholar you should be able to access the full text by following the FindIt button (FindIt.png).

In January 2011, the National Science Foundation (NSF) will begin requiring a data management plan will all new grant proposals. This workshop, geared toward graduate students, faculty and researchers, will provide and overview of the questions to consider when creating a data management plan with a focus on data preservation issues and tools for sharing your data, like subject-based repositories. Better Data Searching
The only thing harder than finding a relevant dataset the first time is finding it again the second time. This session will demonstrate methods for getting better results in Google searches, recommend methods and tools for keeping track of what you have found and show how the Internet Archive can help you find data that seems to have disappeared. Fair use is a vital part of copyright law. Quotation, criticism, review, collage, parody - all involve aspects of fair use. Participants in this workshop for faculty and instructors will develop an understanding of the complexities of fair use, and recognize situations where it might apply. We'll also look at other situations where copyright answers may be more straightforward. Participants will explore fair use concepts using examples from visual arts, music, and video, as well as academic research and writing. Expect to think hard, discuss a little, and have fun!
