Blogs 8&9

Blog 9:

The ensure environment sustainability goal was very intriguing. It was educating that the organization the presenting group choose was very hypocritical. The presenters choose British Petroleum (BP) as their organization. BP spends a lot of money to advertise that they are a clean, environmentally friendly organization. However, they have started to extract oil from Canada, the oil there is a very thick slug that needs to be processed more than most excavated oil. The oil in Canada has to be dug out like a mine instead of being pumped or drilled out. This causes the land and all the vegetation to be removed, even though BP plans to replant trees it will take a long time to recover from such devastation. Also the processing of the oil uses much more machinery that emits more carbon into the atmosphere than traditional oil drilling. This presentation reassured that you can’t believe every thing you here on television, because BP is spending large amounts of money to get a face image across about them.

The presentation on combating aids, HIV, and malaria was interesting. It was alarming to find out that a main reason for the spread of HIV and AIDS was that the government would not believe that unprotected sex and blood contact caused the virus to spread. Another reason that AIDS is a huge problem in South Africa is that it is in their culture to have more than one sexual partner; it shows the wealth status that you can support a large family. By not admitting to the cause of the problem and having strong culture practices, trying to combat AIDS in South Africa is a challenge. In South Africa the large corporations have a large impact on helping with this situation than the government does. They need to try and get people educated about prevention and testing. If more people were tested and took precaution with their partners, the rate of the disease spreading could be greatly reduced.

blog prompt 7: examples of presentation/documentation cover styles

The cover page for the millennium development project is most likely going to consist of a related picture on the majority of the page, there will most likely be the title and authors names either over the picture or on the edges. Some sample examples taken from the internet are below:

blog prompt 6: examples of presentation/documentation styles

For the page layout of the millennium development project, I believe, there will be a portion of the page that delegates the section of the paper that it is in. There will also be pictures related to the topic of the section with of course a writing description explaining the section. Some examples of possible layouts are as follows:

Blog Prompt 4: Letting the mind wonder

What would you do if you were completely released from the constraints of the “architecture school program, what would you do? I don’t think that it is schooling program that is holding architects and designers back! I think it is money and society that are the factors that are holding designers and architects back from meeting there full potential. I think many designers have many ideas to help the community but without the funds to sponsor it or a society to accept it, it’s never going to get farther than just an idea.

One thing I would want to do if I was not held down by any constraints would be to help built more shelters for the homeless. I would want this shelter to be more than just a place for people to sleep and escape the environment. I would want this shelter to be like a helping community. It would have a comfort environment where the users would fell involved and welcomed. I would also want there to be a connection with local establishments, so people could get help getting back on their own two feet with getting a job and a place of their own. I would also have groups that they can join to help their own community, like maintaining a garden or helping out at the food self or kitchen that would be within the shelter. I think that by helping people get more involved and with easier access to helping organizations, it would be more than just a place to spend the night; it would be a place to get a fresh start. I also think by having more involvement with the community and help from organizations, I would hope that when people do get back on the right foot, they could go back and help others get what they need to get back on their feet also.

I think that there is more to just building a building. In order for a building to be used to its full potential it has to have a potential to be used to. In other words when someone is designing a building, the have to imagine it’s different possibilities and incorporate those into the design. For walls and a roof can be thought up by anyone, but to create a place that encloses an idea takes more effort and time, but is definitely recognized in the outcome.

Why So Young?

None of us every really want to lose a loved one, but to loose a loved one at a young age is so heartrending. Children all over the world are dieing of diseases that are fairly easy to prevent. One out of ten children dies before the age of five in low-income countries. In more wealthy countries the rate is not a sever, but still devastating at one out of ever 143 children. That is nearly 11 million children a day that die before turning the age of five.(1)

We have an opportunity to focus global attention on what should be obvious: every mother, and every child, counts. They count because we value every human life. The evidence is clear that healthy mothers and children are the bedrock of healthy and prosperous communities and nations.
~ Dr. LEE Jong-wook, WHO Secretary-General

"...thousands of women could be saved each year if they had access to skilled care during pregnancy and childbirth, and access to emergency obstetric care. Most of the interventions they need are simple, affordable, and highly effective."

First Blog

When I think of the big city, I think about the rapid pace every one takes. It seems like the majority of people in the city are on a very strict time line, where the people in the country side seem to have the image of not have a care in the world. Things will get done when they get done. The city has so many people running all over the place in all forms of transportation that its amassing there isn’t more accidents in the chaos, people speeding along busy sidewalks, cars and buses navigating themselves through intersection.

With all this movement taking place in the city it is over whelming to imagine how much energy is being consumed. There are the lights illuminating the whole city, the vehicles transporting people around. The big city has not always contained this much flow and energy, but it has not always been this populated. Has the city transformed into what it is just because of the population increase? When you go into the farmland area energy and flow is not a concern at all, where in the city that’s all it is. What makes people so different in the city as opposed to the country side? Why aren’t more people relaxed and free flowing?
