Gopher basketball captain hospitalized for break

A University of Minnesota basketball player broke his foot Saturday while competing, said coach Tubby Smith.

Senior co-captain Al Nolen will undergo surgery Wednesday for the break. Smith said he may not return for the remainder of the season, according to the Star Tribune.

"We know that Al will continue to be a leader from the bench," Smith said in a press release.

The Minnesota Daily reported that Nolen sat out five games previous to the University win against Michigan State University due a stress fracture in the same foot.

The Star Tribune said Nolen decided not to have surgery in December with input from the team's medical staff.
