Goal or mission of organization Second Harvest North Central Food Bank's mission is to engage the community to end hunger.

Clientele served Second Harvest serves low income families, children, seniors and disabled adults directly through programs such as the Grand Rapids Food Shelf, Itasca Holiday Program, Kids Packs to Go and USDA Commodity Programs for low income elderly and children. Second Harvest distributes over 4 million pounds of food through these programs and through 145 non-profit hunger relief agencies in the region.

Geographic area served Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Itasca, Kanabec, Koochiching and Mille Lacs counties.

Current state of program Second Harvest distributes food to food shelves that provide groceries to local people in need. Second Harvest also distributes food to non-profits that provide cooked meals to people who come to soup kitchens, youth programs, senior dining programs and homeless shelters. Clients at these agencies are provided with referrals to other sources of food such as food stamps or to other programs that are available for low income people. Nutrition education is facilitated at many locations by local county extension staff.

Capacity for local food work Second Harvest is connected to all the food shelf and charitable meal programs in the region. We currently provide SNAP (food stamp) outreach to all food shelf clients in the region. There may be opportunities for grants available through Hunger Free Minnesota or other sources. We do not have available staff at this time.
