This week we are finishing up Project #2.

Tuesday is a work day where I will be available to help you work out your final issues for the project. See the checklist below to make sure you have met all the criteria of the project.

Thursday will be a small group critique day where we will be reviewing prototypes of the work. The idea here is that you have printed your project and experimented with form and therefore see any potential problems you might have with the design and/or form.

After our group critiques, we will be use the rest of the day for work time.

Reminder of Goals/Checklist:

Goal: Learning and participating in the practice of postmoder design through finding connections and creating a reinterpretation of historical visual forms with new popular culture references to communicate specific message

Does you work have some recognizable connection to one or more of the past history periods discussed?

Are you able to discuss those connections in terms of visual illustrative style, typography, form?

How is your design postmodern?

Goal: Use of typographic form and styling that both matches and is integrated with your original illustrative style and appropriately and efficiently communicate messages

What type face did you choose? What historical period is it referencing? Why is it a good choice for this design? Is it integrated into the imagery?

Goal: Learning how to choose the right medium for a message? What form best suits delivery of message? How can you use the chosen application to increase the impact of the message?

What form did you choose and why? Is it interactive? Why is it more of an experience for the user?

Do your choices in terms of style and form make sense for the intended audience of the piece? In other words, would that particular age group, socioeconomic group, etc. relate to the imagery, type and form chosen?

How is your design more intriguing than what is normally seen for like products? What did you do to think bigger and in more contemporary terms?

Next Week:
Monday/Tuesday: We will check our work more formally. We will talk about formal issues in terms of type, form, medium chosen.

Wednesday/Thursday: Final Critique and Turn in of Work

Schedule for this Week (3/8-3/11)

You should have posted on your blog this week a finding of contemporary design that reflects one of the historical periods of design we discussed last week. Your post as usual will be worth 20 points.

There WILL NOT be a post due for next week. Happy Spring Break.

This week you should have decided which of the content options you will be working with. You should also decide what historical period style best suits the content chosen. Now we will begin working on type choices and style for the work and a MOOD BOARD will be due on Wed./Thurs. of this week. See process and points for this project in the project resources area.

The MOOD BOARD should include examples of both historical and contemporary visual styles reflective of your choices, some typographic options and possibly color choices for the work. Be prepared to justify your choices. Why is the historical visual style chosen most appropriate for the work and how did you choose your type...know the face, when it was made and why its form and style are most appropriate for the work.

Poster Submission to Design 21
Don't forget! Your poster needs to be submitted by Tuesday, March 9! Take a look at the requirements again to make sure you have what they are asking for. Remember, you need to submit a low-res version with a high-res one available if you get chosen. You also need to submit with your statement of intent, so make sure that is sharp. Post your statement of intent on your blog and I'll take a look at it before the end of the week.

Blog Posting
Your blog posting for the week is to find an example of contemporary design that reflects a style from a previous period that has specific commentary on the current topic at hand. Ask me if you don't understand. Have this posted by Monday/Tuesday (Mar. 8/9) so we can talk about it during discussion time.

Project 2
Be prepared to discuss your ideas for the project on Mon./Tues. as well. Have steps 1-3 done (have your content selected, your historical style chosen and some sketches done of your illustrative style), so we can give you feedback on it!

Good News! There will be no readings for next week! However, I do still want you to post one posting on your blog that has to do with the following:

Please find a feature magazine article with accompanying illustrations (I will give examples in class) and discuss why the illustrations and typographic treatment are appropriate for the content of the feature article.

Remember on Monday/Tuesday, your final poster is Due! You must print the poster at full size but do not mount.

Next Week: Feb 22-25

For next week, you will need to do the following:

Mon./Tues.: Have two posters refined to almost completion and ready for class critique. Post two blog posts: one responding to one of the following readings:

anatomy1.pdf
anatomy2.pdf
anatomy3.pdf

...and two, find an example of your own and analyze the anatomy of the design.

Wed./Thurs: Studio day to complete your final poster. Due next week, March 1, 2.

Next Weeks Schedule: Feb. 15/16 + 17/18

Please do not forget that you need to have 4, that's 4 different poster designs ready for critique on Mon/Tues of next week.

You also have 2 blog posts due for next week. See below. We will have the discussion on Wed./Thur. as our critique will probably take the whole time on Mon/Tues.

Mon/Tues: Critique of 4 poster designs; Blog post on international design discussion from this article found on Icograda, the International Council of Design Associations.

Also have a blog post on your own finding of an example of international design with a discussion about how it is different than design from U.S. What type of imagery is being used? How do they use color? Is message conveyed differently than here? More humor or is it more to the point? What type of cultural influences does the design have?

Wed./Thur.: Discussion of international design article plus findings of international design; studio time.
