In httpd.conf changed MaxClients from "40" to "30".
When I tried to restart Apache two rouge instances were still bound to port 80, I used the pkill command to kill those processes.
Bill Tantzen changed the max clients 20 to 40 on Friday Apr 28.
Today the server was using 1.12 GB of memory with 40 Apache Instances. The average process size was 30 MB in size. Using memory over 800MB causes the server to swap, which an IDE drive really slows down the server.
I still believe seperating the public side from the admin size will improve performance.
