Pirates? Attacks are on the rise

I thought pirates were prominently the work of fables and stories, but they seem to be alive and well now, in 2007. CNN reported that Maritime pirate attacks have risen 14 percent in these first 9 months of 2007. That is a worldwide percent, but the most are occurring in Somalia and Nigeria. This is most likely because they are in proximity to one of the busiest waterways in the world, Southeast Asia’s Malacca Strait. 198 attacks of pirates on ships have been reported.
The Inquirer reported that the pirates are hijacking vessels hundreds of miles of shore and keeping the crew and all at ransom. The IMB director Pottengal Mukundan said that, “The level of violence in the high-risk areas remain unacceptable.? It was reported that so far this year, 15 vessels have been hijacked, 3 crewmembers killed, 172 crew taken hostage, 63 kidnapped and 21 assaulted. This issue does not seem to be only the ‘bad guys’ in children’s stories anymore. It is a real issue.
