I have mixed feelings about this manifesto. I agree that graphic design has become commercialized to the point of being defined as such. I get sick of seeing all the crap on shelves today that no one needs- someone had to design the label to get those impulse buyers to grab it! I think it would be great if graphic designers' skills were put to better use on projects that were for charity or for saving the environment, etc. I just think it's a bit farfetched. Designing to sell products or services is the way to go if you want money. Although there are paying opportunities available to design for a good cause or for the improvement of society, there aren't enough for all graphic designers. Plus, many designers like designing product packaging and advertisements. Wouldn't it be cool to say, "Oh, yeah, I designed that for Target..." or "Yep, that's the iPod ad I did"? As much as we'd like to believe that the manifesto's vision can actually happen, it most likely will not.
