Bastard out of Carolina

After reading the part of the story where Anney is upset because Glen was goofing around all day while she was working and due to the lack of income on Glen's behalf she had to feed her girls saltines and ketchup she puts on her trashy clothes and goes out without even a small protest from Glen. It is assumed that she sold herself in order to feed her daughters, is this a point in the story where you realize that Anney would do anything for her girls or is it supposed to represent a different element of Glen and Anney's relationship? Also for what purpose is it not brought up again in the story?
