Adaptations vs. original screenplays

Rebecca asked what the ratio is between movie adaptations and original screenplays. I'm not sure what it is overall, but let's look at the top 10 films this week. They are:

1. Chicken Little (2005)
2. Zathura (2005)
3. Derailed (2005/I)
4. Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005)
5. Jarhead (2005)
6. Saw II (2005)
7. The Legend of Zorro (2005)
8. Prime (2005)
9. Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (2005)
10. Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Of these 10, only Get Rich or Die Tryin' and Prime are original screenplays and are not based on previous material. I'm counting sequals as based on previous material.

Heya, Hope! Cool, thanks for sharing! um, wasn't Prime a stage play first? Gwenyth Paltrow played the same character in the stage version? I might be wrong about the names 8). Nice reading! I don't think I'll ever go for the Bride and Prejudice, what with the singing and all. Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, the A&E version, remains my all-time fave. Not that anyone would care 8) but the only musicals I like are Wizard of Oz and Sound of Music - oh, and maybe the older version of Oliver with Jack Wild as the Dodger (pre-Pufnstuf) and maybe the older version of Fiddler on the Roof with Topol. Otherwise I'm like the Michael Palin Scottish character in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, "Stop that, stop that. No singing!" but now I'd like to see Sahara.

Hi Jenny,

The play that Gwyneth Paltrow was in that will soon be a movie is called Proof. It should be out soon.

So I see the next movie I will have to blog about is the Holy Grail, so I can't taunt you all again.
