Reign of Fire

There is a lot that I could write about Reign of Fire. It's actually a very interesting movie. It often adheres to genre conventions and then sometimes defies them in very subtle ways. But the question that comes to mind right now as I am watching it is, what music do you want to survive into the future?

The story in Reign of Fire is about dragons decimating the human population and the earth. This may seem rather preposterous, but that's the premise. The people that survive this dragon-induced apocalypse live in small communities. At one of their "soirees," they play Jimi Hendrix's "Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire." Would you want that song to live on into the future? What music wouldn't you want to live on into the future? I think we can all agree that anything by Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson or any of those silly boy bands can go bye-bye. But what should live on?

Here's a list of 5 that I would pick:

1. The Beatles,
2. Mozart,
3. Billie Holiday,
4. Dave Brubeck,
5. Wham...ha, ha, just kidding on that one! I really meant Elvis.

i definately agree with #1 and 2 and i'll tell ya why: Beatles - because you can tell alot about the history of the 60's and 70's just by listening to thier music. through poetry and ingenious song writing, they explain so much about those decades. not to mention that as technology developed in the music industry, The Beatles expiramented with (drugs) that technology.

Mozart - because that is just plain good music. his operas are so full of emotions of all kinds and most of his piano works just make me smile. also, he wrote opera in several different languages (french, german, and italian) so those languages would survive.

as far as who else...hmmmmmm i just don't know, but i'm not sure Hendrix would be even close to the top of my list.

Since I broached my lurk-itude...

That is a pretty good list of artists. It reminds me of the "Desert Island Disks". The question is are you talking about music or cd's? Because I would take someone with a vast amount of music produced over someone like Jimi Hendrix who has only a few (albeit excellent) albums.

For instance, I would take Duke Ellington over Dave Brubeck simply on volume of work. Thus, there could be great variety of music as well as a large volume to chose from. Although I would probably hum "Take Five" on my own accord.

However, if we were restricted to one album/cd from one of these artists, picking just one from Duke Ellington would be difficult... The same would be true for the Beatles. Which album to chose? "Sargent Peppers"?

What about the Rolling Stones. Again, for sheer amount of music, you could go a while without repeat...

Besides Duke Ellington (or Count Basie) over Dave Brubeck, I would probably go with Wham! over Elvis. No wait! I guess I have to go with the king...
