There is a moment in every movie in which things can either turn out really well, or go very badly. It's that moment right before the climax when you hold your breath and hope for the best. In Little Miss Sunshine, it was that moment right before Olive's performance. Usually, a movie will spend the whole second act building up to that moment. The plot in this movie meandered here and there and progressed slowly to that moment. But it really wasn't about how well - or how badly - Olive would perform. It would really be about how she and her family responded to that performance. As a mother of a kid who has had his share of Olive-ish moments, I am glad it turned out as it did.
Without any further analysis, this was a really good movie. It was funny and thought provoking, which is usually not something you will find together in one movie.
On a somewhat related note, watch "The Dakota Fanning Show" from SNL, where Abigail Breslin (played by Drew Barrymore) chats with Dakota about movies and stuff. I saw the skit before I saw this movie, which made me giggle all the more while watching it.
at February 18, 2007 11:08 PMI'm so glad you finally saw this! I was so touched by a lot of it. Man, those were some messed up people. It was funny and sad and just when you thought you knew what they were going to do...they didn't.
I need to own that one.
Posted by: Kate at February 21, 2007 1:14 PMI wanted to let you know that I had to buy this movie yesterday. There are four alternate endings....but the one they had was ultimately the best. By a lot. The four alternates weren't even really that different from each other.
Anyway. I want to watch it again right now!
