Was anyone else totally shocked that everyone but Marky Marky was dead at the end? I was completely surprised when Leonardo DiCaprio's character was capped in the head. It was so unexpected that it took me a while to actually realize that he had been killed.
Was anyone totally shocked that The Departed won an Oscar for Best Picture? I wasn't, since it seems like the Oscars have resorted to giving pity awards for those who haven't gotten one but have been nominated more than once before. That is except for that poor sound guy whose been nominated over 17 times and had never won...can't recall his name though. I'm not saying that this movie isn't a good one, but I would have preferred it if Little Miss Sunshine would have won. Perhaps its more appropriate that a picture like The Departed wins in our current state of affairs.
By the way, Pan's Labyrinth winning for Best Cinematography, whatever! It was so dark and dreary most of the time you couldn't really tell that any effort was made. The cinematography in The Illusionist was far superior.
at February 26, 2007 6:47 PMThe Oscars are totally political. It's never about what is truly best (and I'm using historical perspective as the judge here, not my own bias), it's all about who will they vote for. Like you knew that Mel Gibson didn't have a shot in hell at winning his nominations because of the whole anti-semitism rant. It's also funny how things like the shorts will win based on their name alone (because most voters won't see them).
I didn't see The Departed and I won't. Martin Scorsese has only robbed me of my money in the past and I'm just not going to hand it over any more.
I wrote down that they would give "Children of Men" best cinematography. I also put it down for editing. It was hedging my bet, really. I thought, they'll either be taken in with the long shots and the shooting at each other (which they really like) or they will have figured out that the long shots weren't actually long shots and it was all pieced together seamlessly and say "crap! that's good editing!". I was wrong on both counts. I didn't want it to win, but I thought it would.
I want to own Little Miss Sunshine. That movie just makes me so happy.
