Oquama ?
I received many thoughtful comments about the Assembly talk on Friday. Most saying that they were sorry we were in such horrible financial shape but optimistic that we can get ourselves out of this and move on to do good work. My favorite comment was someone who referred to me as "Oquama" - thnaks. The issue of morale that Mary Jo Kane brought up is a difficult one. How can we improve morale?

The question about the importance of raising morale or even trying to maintain morale is very interesting. I am thrilled to be a part of CEHD, and I am impressed with how well students are doing despite the murky economic news.
I think the morale issue is best addressed at the individual level: what aspects of your job do you enjoy the most? What aspects do you like the least? Can you give yourself the time to savor the enjoyable aspects of your job? Can you challenge yourself to working on your personal perspective and mood you take on when working through some of the dicier aspects of your work?
It seems that in lean times, we are being asked to do more with fewer resources. If we are creative about how we deliver our courses, programs, and such to students and other consumers of education, this place could be great!
I love working in CEHD, and it does trouble me when others are obviously unhappy. However, I have chosen to remain positive even though we are going through hard times.
