I've noticed an increased popularity in rotoscoping for films such as Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly, and for commercials as well.

In visual culture today, I have noticed a change in the way information is presented in mass media. For example, in this AT&T commercial attached, the audience is required to make their own associations to AT&T, specifically their tagline “More bars in more places.” In each frame cut, there is a different association to the four bars increasing. While it is subtle, and mostly found in the backgrounds, the viewer makes that connection. I enjoy this commercial because you have to look for the representation of those bars in each scene. I think this commercial shows how far visual culture has come. Commercials from the past used to be used to strictly inform, or use literal product selling. Nowadays, commercials like this one leave it up to the viewer to make their own connections, while entertaining us at the same time.

My dad sends me about ten forwards a day and he actually sent me an interesting one this morning, with photos of painted hands. I googled "painted hands" and I found the name of the artist from the forward:

Guido Daniele

Amazing stuff! My first reaction was that they might be photoshopped somehow, but they're real paintings. Very cool concept!

If you click on the photos they pop up larger in a new tab.

I like this Scion TC car commercial. With no words they really catch your attention by the music.

I'm not sure the technique they use but I think the way they divide pixels and change the cars is really interesting. It all lines up with the beat of the music.

Although short, very affective.

What I have noticed and enjoy in present digital culture, is how the use of mixed media is increasingly becoming more popular. From things as simple as clothing designs, to skateboards, packaging design...etc. I am a subscriber to Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine, and one of the newly featured artists is Augustine Kofie. I really particularly liked the "Metallum" exhibition. This would be a style that I would like to look into working with...

I really haven't paid much attention to what I watch to really notice the new digital effects that are being used, so I went online and found this site that has a bunch of artists that use photo manipulation to make their images. I thought that they all were really well done.

My comment from last week didn't show up for some reason, but I noticed that several commercials are finding news ways of incorporating people like the end of the intel commercial, and a couple of the prius commercials.

This week I noticed the text heavy commercials. I see someone already commented on the ford commercial, but what caught my eye was the one for dodge. It seems like its trying to do a similar thing in a minimalistic way, but I think they could have done a lot more with it.

I recently saw the commercial for the new Toyota Prius and was absolutely amazed!! I can't even imagine all of the editing and layering they had to do to create this very organic utopian landscape!
There are a couple commercials they made for the Prius-- they all have the same feel and do a really good job capturing my attention throughout the ENTIRE commercial, which is a pretty hard thing to do!

***here is one of the commercials:

***here is a little behind the scenes tidbit on how they made it!
