Noticing > Visual Culture

I didn't travel too much this summer, but did take a trip to Seattle in June. There I scouted out a few quirky art boutiques. I found a string of small storefronts on 2nd Avenue, near the Pike Place Market and my old haunts in Belltown. There is a trio of shops called Fancy Schmancy Pants. Nearby is my favorite new little gallery, Nancy.

Nancy is a tiny gallery and gift shop owned by artists Kate Greiner and Aaron Murray, who are also husband and wife. I am a fan of Aaron's work which I was delighted to run across a few years ago when he had a booth in the pike place market. He makes amazing miniature ceramic sculpture, woodcut prints, and humorous hand painted trading cards. It is inspiring to see young artists carving out a funky niche for their work in a city filled with high-end retail stores.

Matt Schulz saw some interesting street art in Spain:
While I was studying abroad in Spain last spring, I became very aware of the massive amounts of graffiti in the area I lived. The interesting thing about some of this graffiti was that it didn't use text as a subject, but figures, portraits, that looked more like paintings on canvas than graffiti with spray paint. The control of the spay paint and detail in which they completed the pieces is pretty unbelievable. Not to mention the speed that they completed them in.

Jane Ollila visited Chicago this summer and noticed this:
While in the windy city, I loved to explore the architecture, graffiti, history and street art. I think my favorite part of Chicago is how the city has so many historic places and buildings, yet modern art can still be found in the middle of these sites. I also like the diversity of the city and how it is integrated in the various expression of Chicago art.
