Local Area Analysis

Local Area Analysis

Greetings!

I am happy to announce that we have put together another webpage to help
researches find demographic and statistical information for states, counties, cities, townships, places, zip codes, and other geographical areas. This page should be of value to people in marketing and economics, or anyone needing area specific information.

it is call "Local Area Analysis," and it is located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/localarea.html

and is also located as in link in the Left Navigation Bar of my Launch Pad site located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/

If you have any questions or suggestions, please give me a call, 726-6157.

Thanks!

For those who use the MediaMark Reporter

For those who use the MediaMark Reporter

Greetings!

The MediaMark Reporter is relatively new to us, but it has been getting a bit of use. Up to now, I have been providing a handout paper and located on PDF here:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/mediamarknew.pdf
(and on my MediaMark link on my Left Nav)

This has worked well until recently when I was asked some technical questions as to definitions of terms and values of "Quintiles" and "Terciles." I have discovered that this WELL HIDDEN link is very useful:

http://www.mediamark.com/MRI/docs/techguide.html

I will be putting this link on the INFO page, and on my MediaMark page.

This link provides researches with Tech Guides from 1998 to present.

If you have questions, please give me a call.

Thanks!!

Duluth News Tribune

Duluth News Tribune

Greetings!

For years I have been advocating getting the online Duluth News Tribune database. It contains full text of the DNT from 1995 to the present. It is very expensive. Not having it has been a pain. We have to work with the so-so search feature at their free site, and then work with the microfilm.

I have just learned that the Duluth Public Library now has this database. Anyone with a Duluth Public Library card can assess this database from their home or office. The access point is here:

http://www.duluth.lib.mn.us/Databases/Databases.html

This is a very important source for people doing research on local people, businesses, organizations, companies, economic conditions, etc.

So, for those who are eligible for a DPL card, we are set to go.

I hope you found this information useful.

Thanks!

Ulrich's Periodicals Directory Online

Ulrich's Periodicals Directory Online

Greetings!

I am happy to announce that we now have electronic access to "Ulrich's Periodicals Directory Online."

ulrich.gif

Ulrichs Periodical Directory contains nearly a quarter-million serial records, including: academic and scholarly publications, consumer magazines, electronic publications, monographic series, newsletters, newspapers, trade publications,
'zines, and many other types of serial publications. Contact information, circulation statistics, and advertising rates are also provided.

It is useful for a number of purposes. Finding periodicals related to a particular trade, industry or discipline. Also, current advertising costs are listed and that can be useful in marketing research. It can be used in conjunction with the information found in the "MediaMark Reporter."

It is listed on my "Launch Pad" site, and in "Marketing Essentials," and

on the list of business databases located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/lib/elist/subjectpage.php?s_Subject=2&DoSearch=Search

I hope you will find this information useful.

Industry Analysis

Industry Analysis

Greetings!

We have created a new web page called "Industry Analysis" located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/industryanalysis.html

and it can also be accessed on the Left Navigation bar of my "Launch Pad" site
located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/

There is some overlap between "Marketing Essentials" and "Industry Analysis," however "Industry Analysis" contains more Industry related sources. This web page is not intended to be comprehensive, but it does list and/or link to, our most significant reference books, databases and links, with annotations.

If you spot important sources I have overlooked, please let me know.

I hope you will find this new addition useful.

Marketing Essentials

Marketing Essentials

Greetings!

We have put together a new webpage on my "Business Research Launch Pad" site located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/

It is called "Marketing Essentials," and it can be found on the Left Navigational bar of the site, or by going directly to:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/marketingessentials.html

It contains the research sources (databases, search engines, catalogs, and reference books) most important and vital to marketing research. I intend to teach from this site when giving library/marketing presentations. Note that each item on the page has an annotation explaining why the source is important.

My "Marketing Research" webpage located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/mktgresearch.html

will continue to exist. It is a far larger, more comprehensive source, but not suitable for initial instruction.

If you have questions or comments, feel free to email or call.

The Duluth Metropolitan Statistical Area (Census)

The Duluth Metropolitan Statistical Area (Census)

Greetings!

I cannot remember if I mentioned this to you before, but a recent reference question I worked on reminded me of the issue.

A number of you, or your students, may be doing research (marketing, economic, other) using census information (population, economic, other) where you are looking at a metro area analysis. I want to remind you that metro areas can change over time, and this could result, in some instances, where you might be comparing "apples and oranges" over
different time periods.

Of particular interest to those of you doing local research, is the Duluth Metropolitan Area. The Duluth Metro area historically has included all of St. Louis County, MN and all of Douglas County, WI. This includes information reported in the 2000 Census. However, somewhere around 2002 or so, the Census Bureau also included Carlton County, MN into the Duluth Metro area.

This may be a logical thing to do for the purpose of making
a demographic or economic analysis of a connected economic region. However, it is important, to remember the Metro definitions over time in order to state your numbers and comparisons correctly.

By studying the Metro Area definitions found on these two pages, you can see how a Metro Area was defined at a given year:

http://www.census.gov/population/www/estimates/metrodef.html
and
http://www.census.gov/population/www/estimates/pastmetro.html

Please let me know if this was useful to you.

Thanks!!!

Google Scholar

Google Scholar

Good news! As noted below, Google Scholar, located at:

http://scholar.google.com/

is now linked via our "Find It" service, to UMD Electronic Journals!

Please let me know what you think of this new way of working with UMD Library electronic resources.

I am resending this announcement regarding Google Scholar for two reasons:

1. Google Scholar is a significant new research tool, and now that UMD Library resources are linked to it, it is even better.

2. People seemed to have missed the significance of the last part of the message... where instructions are provided for setting preferences for UMD People do research off campus through services like Charter. If you do not set preferences, you will not see the UMD links to electronic resources.

Mintel Reports

Mintel Reports

I am very happy to announce that our recent Mintel trial was well received, and a very favorable joint contract was worked out with the Twin Cities campus. This means that the Mintel Database should be turned on for this campus sometime between now and the beginning of the next semester. That short trial was timely.... many of these reports have been incorporated into the recent work of marketing students. I look forward to feedback as to how access to Mintel (and the newly acquired MediaMark) has changed the quality of student research and presentations.

Also, if you study these reports, you can see how they can be used for research in other business areas.

If you are planning for your students to do library assignments next semester, keep in mind that these very fine reports are now available.

If you wish to learn more about Mintel, you can do so at this site:

http://reports.mintel.com/

If you have questions or comments, please give me a call.

Thanks!!!

Here is the follow up to my previous message. Mintel Reports are now available on our list of Indexes and Datbases. These Reports can be vital to a variety of Marketing research projects:

NOTE: Data can be downloaded into a spreadsheet. Only available to students, faculty, and staff currently affiliated with UMD. All users must agree to conditions of use and create their own profile.

Videos Web Page

Videos Web Page

A few days ago I placed a handout in your mail boxes on the many videos ordered recently. I received a suggestion to annotate the titles and place it on my "Launch Pad" site. This has been accomplished. It now contains most LSBE related titles acquired from 1998 to present, and it will be updated as more titles are ordered. It is located at:

http://www.d.umn.edu/~jvileta/videos.html

and can be found on the left navigation bar of "Launch Pad."
