Abstract: In the decade prior to the recent home foreclosure crisis, immigrant households represented an important component of new homeowners in Minneapolis. Using data collected by Minneapolis Public Schools on the primary language spoken in the home as a proxy for nativity status, I identify which foreclosed properties between the years 2006 and 2008 were inhabited by immigrant households with school-aged children. The relative frequency of the language spoken in foreclosed homes indicates the foreclosure rates of specific immigrant groups. Further, a spatial analysis of the nativity status of households living in foreclosed properties reveals the extent to which the patterns of immigrant households in foreclosure matched the patterns of foreclosed homes overall. Results will help to inform future foreclosure prevention strategies among immigrant households.

I just finished reading an AMAZING book about the Hmong experience chronicled from Laos to Thailand and finally to the US. The book was written by the cousin of two of my advisees and it is so eloquently written. This book is for anyone who wants to know more about their Hmong students and their family history AND for people who already think they know their Hmong students. You will learn so much more about your students and why/how they are who they are.
