Jason Baird Jackson
Associate Professor of Folklore,
Indiana University

Jason Baird Jackson is an ethnographer whose work bridges the fields of folklore studies, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and ethnomusicology. He is the editor of the open-access scholarly journal Museum Anthropology Review, published by the Indiana University Libraries as part of the IUScholarWorks Journals project. Jackson launched the journal after becoming dissatisfied with publisher policies while serving as editor of Museum Anthropology, published by the American Anthropological Association and Wiley-Blackwell. He was part of a group that recently published an article entitled "Anthropology of/in Circulation: The Future of Open Access and Scholarly Societies," which appeared in Cultural Anthropology and is now freely available. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with faculty members from the Academic Health Center, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Institute of Technology.

Google Starts Grant Program

Google_book.jpg"Even as a lawsuit over its book-digitization project remains up in the air, the search giant has quietly started reaching out to universities in search of humanities scholars who are ready to roll up their sleeves and hit the virtual stacks.

The company is creating a "collaborative research program to explore the digital humanities using the Google Books corpus," according to a call for proposals obtained by The Chronicle. Some of Google's academic partners say the grant program marks the company's first formal foray into supporting humanities text-mining research."

Bruce Horner is Endowed Chair in Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Louisville, where he teaches courses in composition, composition theory and pedagogy, and literacy studies. His books include the co-edited Cross-Language Relations in Composition (Southern Illinois UP, forthcoming); Terms of Work for Composition: A Materialist Critique, winner of the W. Ross Winterowd Award for Composition Theory; Key Terms in Popular Music and Culture, co-edited with Thomas Swiss; and, co-authored with Min-Zhan Lu, Representing the "Other": Basic Writers and the Teaching of Basic Writing and Writing Conventions. "English Only and U.S. College Composition," an essay he co-authored with John Trimbur, is the recipient of the Richard Braddock Award. His recent work examines the implications of scholarship on world Englishes and English as a lingua franca for the teaching of writing.

The interdisciplinary graduate minor in Literacy and Rhetorical Studies (housed in the Center for Writing) sponsors the Speaker Series to engage faculty and graduate students in rich discussions about the uses of language, reading, and writing. Information about past and present Speaker Series events is available at writing.umn.edu/lrs.

Dr. Horner's talk is also sponsored by the Department of Writing Studies, the First-Year Writing Program, and the Literacy Education Research Series, with additional support from the University of Minnesota's programs in Post-Secondary Teaching and Learning and in Second Languages and Cultures.

Digital De-cluttering and updating

The task for this week? Find and clean up all those digital profiles that are lurking out there on the Internet. Chances are, you haven't ever really given it much thought, but you might have as many as twenty profiles collecting cobwebs in cyberspace. When someone finds you, do you want them to see outdated photos, website information, marital status, or job status? Heck no! Not only would that be unprofessional, but it might lead to some pretty awkward conversations.

We'll cover inserting images and charts, getting your page numbers in the right place, generating tables of contents and figures; and more. Please note that this workshop covers the basic formatting you'll need to comply with Graduate School guidelines. Participants should have basic experience using MS Word. Note this version of the workshop specifically uses Office 2007; an instruction manual is available for Word 2003. We will be using a template and not be working with individual dissertations. Do you use the myLibrary tab? This is a page you can use to organize your favorite resources, indexes, ejournals, databases and more. It includes the books you have checked out and dates they are due back.

To get to your page, click on "my Library" from either of the the following two locations.

Then as you use the University Libraries, simply click on the "Add to myLibrary" button whenever you see it. It will then become part of your page.
