Question 3:

Would you propose any matching criteria? If so, what would you match on? Justify your choice for matching (if proposed). If you decide not to match, explain why you decided not to do so.

At this point, I'm not sure that we need to match. There is only one potential confounder that I can think of and that is socioeconomic status. We don't know whether it costs money for people to use the hot tub so that may be a potential confounder here.

I'm not sure if it is better to match either as of now. However, I am giving great attention to the shortness of exposure to onset. A case developed the disease on much the same day of exposure. In addiotion to that, incidence among children and elderly is small.

From these findings, it seems to be plausible to think that only the people with high susceptibility were infected. Hence it might be reasonable to match controls to cases by immune condition.
For example;
persons with weakened immune systems include those with HIV/AIDS;
cancer and transplant patients who are taking certain immunosuppressive drugs;
and those with inherited diseases that affect the immune system.

I think we may match on age and gender, since these two variables are possible confounders. From the table on page 4, we can see the distributions of the two varibles among the cases are heterogeneous across the strata. These two variables may influence the two arrows (one to the exposures we suspected, and the other to the disease.) But I am more confident on age than gender.
Please give your comments.
