Fire official: two trapped NC children may be dead

Two children were trapped under dirt at a residential construction site in North Carolina on Sunday, and are not expected to be found alive, news sources reported.

The father of the kids called 911 around 6 p.m. to report the accident, but despite a quick response from rescue crews, the 7-year-old and the 6-year-old remain trapped, ABC news said.

Denver Fire Department public information officer Dion Burleson told the Associated Press that the rescue mission has become a recovery mission, meaning the boy and girl are believed to be dead, the Fremont Tribune reported.

News sources said recovery crews are expected to work into Sunday night as officials do not know how far down the children were trapped.
