I'm coming out of my Pod!

This was quite an experience. It helped that I created a script for my podcast. It's really amazing how people can talk for such a long period of time on a single subject. I think Campbell puts it well when he says, "the implications of Apples embrace of podcasting are both exciting and troubling. The development is exciting because students will have a free, easy-to-use, dual-platform (Windows and Mac) audio-content manager that will help make podcasting pervasive and effective."

Great observations Mark. I miss the hustle and bustle of running to class and interacting with my fellow students. Unfortunately the past 2 years have all been online for the core classes for my degree. There is no replacement for face-to-face conversation.

I have been working since 1976. I like your example of the student used to listening to podcasts and now they have to physically go to work. There really aren't many jobs that can be done by listening to a podcast.

Nice job

Mike

You make some good points about the effects podcasting lectures will have. It does sound like an attractive idea to have podcasts of lectures online, but its true that it would encourage skipping. And as you say, thats a bad habit to get into. But I think that from then on students would have no excuse for being behind in work or lecture material, which I suppose would increase accountability in classes.

I agree with you that if more lectures become podcasted, that students would feel less inclined to attend class. But that would also mean that teachers would have to allow for students to substitute class for podcasted lectures. That would be more about a revolutionary way of teaching than watching podcasted lectures. If anything, podcasting would be better for some students because of its convenience. Instead of choosing not to attend class because one is not feeling well or overslept, they can still attain the information that they need from the podcasted lecture. I don't think that podcasted lectures are going to go so far as to make people not attend work in the mornings. I think that people are smart enough to know that there are some things that they have to be present for. I agree with you that podcasted lectures will add to laziness and will encourage skipping class, but once again, if the teachers make attendance mandatory, then podcasting wouldn't threaten attendance. I agree with you that knowledge is power and that podcasted lectures don't dilute the value of class material.
