short on Google Maps & Privacy
One of the (too many) things that fascinate me are popular conceptualizations of Internet issues. Sometimes they demonstrate paranoia, and sometimes they're right-on. Here's one on privacy issues and Google Maps:

When Google first came out with the street by street mapping of houses, I read in the newspaper about people who were upset because they were photographed in their front yards while their pets were doing their business or else they could be seen inside their house. I bet they could relate to this video.
I, of course, felt compelled to look for my house. I have to admit to being a little disappointed they hadn't photographed west of Snelling. But I bet I wouldn't be too happy either if I was caught in my front yard or the inside of my house was visible.

I love this video! It does a great job of pointing out how vulnerable we really are on the web. I definately can understand the problems people had with themselves showing up on the maps. And the real problem with this capability is that once your image is placed on the web it is pretty much permanent since computers cache nearly everything.
I worry sometimes that criminals can use Google maps to plan crimes. It gives them complete shots of all of these places so that they can know where to hide and how to sneak around. However, I do use Google maps all the time and couldn't imagine try to do business without it now. I don't know what else to think about this other than with the good always come the bad.

Hi Krista, thanks for posting this video. This is very timely as I received a phishing message from MySpace last night, and yes I'm very paranoid now. So when you wrote, "Sometimes they demonstrate paranoia, and sometimes they're right-on."--right on with my paranoia. While I was watching the video on Google maps, I have to admit that it was kind of like watching a horror movie. Sometimes I get scared easily, and when I was watching it, I kept on thinking, "Should I look away?! Do I need to look away from the screen? What's going to happen next?!" Great video!
