Week of 10/1 *First day / follow story*

According to the CNN.com:

The first lead from CNN’s first article on the arrest of O.J. Simpson was: “Former football star O.J. Simpson will be held without bail after his arrest on robbery and assault charges, police announced late Sunday. This article was posted Monday, September 17.

On Tuesday, the lead in CNN’s second article on Simpson stated, “Prosecutors on Tuesday filed numerous criminal charges against former NFL star O.J. Simpson and three other men in connection with an alleged armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel last week.

The lead in first CNN article has information on his arrest from the police, and that he was held without bail, and that he was arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault charges.

The lead in the second CNN article has information on Simpson’s arrest from the prosecutors and the formal charges that were filled. It also mentioned three other men, and the Las Vegas hotel where the alleged armed robbery took place.

The first lead is an initial informative, while the second one doesn’t give too much detail, but talks more of the formal charges.

The main news is summarized basically the same for both articles. They each give background on Simpson and his former NFL career. They both talk about the Las Vegas scene and the alleged armed robbery, three men, and the assault charges.

The first article talks about: “No bail for ex-NFL star accused of directing men in alleged armed robbery. Simpson faces charges of robbery, assault, burglary and conspiracy. Alleged robbery involved sports-related items, police say. Simpson arrested Sunday in Las Vegas, but he says items were his.

The second story gives more information on the formal charges, and that prosecutors officially charge the three other men that Simpson was with that night in Las Vegas. It also introduces a fourth suspect who is in police custody, and that the LAPD have released a video showing two unidentified men. This article also talks about the alleged victim who is in the hospital and is in critical condition because of a heart attack.

I didn’t see a response to a report from a competing news organization in the second-day story, but they did mention a celebrity website to which the alleged victim gave an interview. Since CNN didn’t respond to a competing news organization, their news follow wasn’t shaped by another news organization. CNN, doesn’t usually do that anyway.
