Bridge collapses in India
A bridge that was under construction over an icy Himalayan river in Ringafar, India, collapsed Sunday, killing four workers and leaving 19 others missing and feared dead, police said (The New York Times).
Rescuers were searching the banks of the river for more bodies or survivors, said B. Srinivas, a senior police official.
The incident took place outside the town of Uri, 62 miles west of Srinagar, the main city in the region.
Pakistan's army has been asked to help in the rescue operation because some of the workers may have been swept downstream into Pakistan (Sky News).
Srinivas said it was not immediately clear what caused the bridge to fall. Construction accidents are common in India, where little regard is paid to safety and shoddy materials are often used (Sky News).
