A few years ago, I joked that I thought it would be funny to get a giant stuffed marlin to hang above my bed. I had this idea in my head that I'd be able to judge a potential suitor's character based on his reaction to the fish. Flash forward a few years....it turns out PJ thought it would make for a good joke too. Only in his version he showed up at my door with a seven foot sailfish. It seems that while he was on a recent road trip, his friend Joel was emailing him craigslist ads for fish along the way. PJ ended up finding one in Chicago, the former resident of a now closed Bucktown bar called Darwin's. His name--Darwin Finnegan Fish.

I had planned to hang him in the bedroom, but since the only place he'd fit put his beak right at the level of my recently la$ered eyes, I decided he'd be safer in the living room over the TV. A mount, a screw, a tool (jokes were made) and a stud finder (I resisted) later, he's all moved in. Pretty handsome, no?

Darwin's official fish story: PJ and I caught him while ice fishing on Lake Michigan.

PJ and I should probably get engaged so that I can send this photo out in next year's Christmas cards.

Until then, watch your inboxes for an invite to the Fish Warming Party.

Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs
7th Street Entry, Minneapolis
w/ Delaney Davidson
November 17, 2008

Holly and Lawyer Dave filled the evening with songs (thematically ranging from domestic violence, to escalators, Jägermeister, suicide, pornography, and back to domestic violence) nearly all of which are hated by the people of Salt Lake City.

Most songs were also introduced with an amusing anecdote:
LD: "This song is about when I broke Holly's arm with my horse."
HG: "But it wasn't a real horse. It was a one of those sticks with a head on it. So it could have been a lot worse."

Delaney Davidson, who was one of the better opening acts I've seen in a long time, managed to get quite a few audience members waltzing during the show. PJ bought his CD and I plan to make him lend it to me.

"I was born in 1941. That was the year they bombed Pearl Harbor. There have been some dark times since then. It looks like things are going to change now." (Roughly translated from Dylan)

Encore:
Blowin' in the Wind

The show was pretty good. I think Masters of War was probably my favorite song of the evening. All of the oldies had new arrangements. It's All Right Ma was half over by the time I recognized it. But, it was a fun show. Plus, I now get to answer "Watching Bob Dylan sing Blowing' in the Wind" to the question "Where were you when the United States elected it's first African American president?" That's pretty cool.

Electric Six @ First Avenue
October 26, 2008
w/ Local H & The Millionth Word

Indeed, there are now TWO capes. (For those who are keeping track, that's two capes more than Shannon has.) They opened with Flashy Man--Dick wore a red cape with "Flashy" written in cursive glitter on the back. Then Smorgasbord took off the Flashy cape to reveal the "It's Showtime" cape underneath, and they played that one next.

Memorable Moments:
"My Drummer" is from Eden Prairie, Minnesota. My Drummer has a radical agenda. Radical Drummer. My Drummer is offering one dollar off domestic beers at the Aquarium tomorrow in Fargo North Dakota. My Drummer has a credit card. My Drummer is a community organizer. My Drummer is starting a drum clinic... showing you the way... Play the drums for one night and you hear some drumming, teach a man to drum and he'll end up just like My Drummer, stuck in a miasma that never ends, ending up at First Avenue time and time again. My Drummer is going to make the call about when he takes it back up.

From now on, Electric Six is demanding the media investigate whether political candidates are pro-Electric Six or anti-Electric Six. Dick Valentine is donating money to El Tinklenberg. El Tinklenberg is Spanish for "The Tinklenberg."

Dick did laps around the inside of First Avenue at the end of Formula 409.

Tate and Dick nearly cracked up when Tate did the "disco burn" whisper in Future is in the Future. I did crack up.

Set List, not in order, and to the best of my recollection:
Flashy Man
It's Showtime
We Were Witchy Witchy White Women
Dirty Ball
Lovers Beware
Your Heat is Rising
Danger! High Voltage
Gay Bar
Improper Dancing / Sexy Trash
Rock and Roll Evacuation
Dance Epidemic
Future is in the Future
I Buy the Drugs
Down at McDonnelzzz
When I Get to the Green Building
Dance Pattern
Germans in Mexico

Encore
Gay Bar Part Two
She's White
Formula 409
Dance Commander

Normally, I find bus drivers to be rather surly and I think most of them take pleasure in racing away as some poor sap runs to catch them. But, this morning I witnessed the most unpredictable of events. The driver of my bus saw a kid miss the 2 running ahead of us, and swooped in to save him. He quickly pulled up to the curb, opened the door, and yelled "Quick get in, we'll catch him!" He then zipped down University, where he did indeed catch the 2 at a traffic light. The kid hopped off the 6U and onto the 2, and I found it impossible to be crabby for the rest of the day.
