A New Hampshire boy shot himself in the face in a crowded elementary school cafeteria on Friday, officials said.
The boy, 14-year-old Hunter Mack, was hospitalized after shooting himself around 11 a.m. on Friday at Walpole Elementary. The school was locked down for several hours, but no one else was injured, police told Fox News.
Chesire County Attorney Peter Heed told ABC News that Hunter was possibly upset over "relationship issues" with a girl.
"It clearly involved a relationship issue; I think that is fair to say," Heed said.
Nick Phillips, an eighth-grader in class with Hunter, said the 14-year-old had been passing notes during the week saying he was depressed, but it wasn't clear why.
As of Friday afternoon, the 14-year-old was in critical condition at a New Hampshire hospital.
Counselors were parked in the school parking lot on Saturday to talk to students and faculty. School will go on Monday as usual.
