Okay, recently I was walking to class and I was approached by not one but two different people asking me if I wanted to send Bush back to Texas? It’s fine if they want to have their opinion but please don't try and preach to me about why Bush is a bad leader. I'm a republican and proud of, but I don't push my views upon democrats. When these radical people are trying to persuade me to vote Kerry or whatever, all I can think about is how much more I like Bush.
Posted by ridd0028 at September 28, 2004 11:08 AM | TrackBackI totally agree with you. I too am a republican, and it is really hard to be on a predominantly liberal campus. Every where I look it's "Yea Kerry this..." and "Boo Bush that..." Please, dont tell me who to vote for. I can figure it out for myself, thank you.
Posted by: Jessica C at September 28, 2004 11:37 AMI am a liberal, and I agree that some people take the whole political thing way to far.
Posted by: Mike A at September 28, 2004 01:20 PMYeah, i'm pretty liberal and even i'm completely sick of all the people pushing kerry and bashing bush. how about talking about the issues your candidate stands for instead of bashing the other candidates personality. People are generally already set in where their vote is going to go, and those who aren't are probably just going to be turned off by all the name-calling.
Posted by: Tom Weaver at September 28, 2004 06:13 PMAgreed, people really need to not try to convince others who the right person to vote for is....however, on the other hand, I do believe that people should be able to voice their political opinions i.e boo bush or screw kerry as that as a way of life in society today. But yes, I am strongly opposed to people no matter what their political affiliation who try to convince people that their vote is a waste if its for so and so or this or that....let's leave it at this...we all need a right to choose...WHO ...also please...please... please...EVERYONE VOTE...do NOT waste your privledge...VOTE ON NOV 2
Posted by: Evan at September 28, 2004 07:20 PMI agree that its unproductive for campaigners to hassle passers-by. But I will defend anyone's right to talk politicaly in public spaces. What the Kerry campaigners should do is set up tables or kiosks or posters to get people's attention, and then talk to people that want to talk to you. Also, passing out flyers or leaflettes to those that will take them is also a method that doesn't necessarily hassle anyone. The problem with some of these Kerry campaigners is that they are too aggressive, not that they are trying to be persuasive.
The cornerstone of a free society is the ability to voice your views publicly. I defend the right of Kerry campaigners to try to convince me to vote for Kerry, although I agree that their tactics are overly aggressive and counter productive.
Posted by: Tyler at September 30, 2004 02:49 PMOne more thought on this subject.
I can sympathize with the republican woman who said, "it is really hard to be on a predominantly liberal campus," although I think the situations I've experienced were much more uncomfortable.
At various times in my life, I have lived in predominantly Republican areas, mostly in Western Minnesota. This was especially hard after 9/11, when everyone rallied around the president, whom I detest, and used patriotism to avoid discussing real issues. In some instances, I did not feel that I could express my views for fear that I would be beaten.
Lets make sure that this campus is a place were both democrats and republicans feel safe expressing their views.
Posted by: Tyler at September 30, 2004 03:03 PMYeah it's hard not to get mad when people yell in your face to vote one way or change the way you eat, dress, or walk. But lets face it this is college now and this is when people start getting view points of their own and think they are the right ones and they want everybody to change. I don't like getting bombarded either but when you give people freedom they run with it.
