Stem Cell Research has been an issue for years; whether or not to use fetuses for stem cell research. This is one of John Kerry's main focus on the presidential race. He talked with a high school in Hampton, New Hampshire, with actor Michael J. Fox, about the positive effects of stem cell research. If you don't know, Michael J. Fox is suffering from the illness Parkinson's diesease. I think that stem cell research would help this world a great deal, but using fetuses for science just doesn't float-the-boat for some people. The way I see it is that the scientists that have to handle the fetuses must only use them in extreme situations. Curing cancer or brain malfunction would be a good reason to use a fetus. It seems like they can just do whatever they feel like doing.
Posted by king0493 at October 4, 2004 03:53 PM | TrackBackAre you sure that "fetuses" are used for stem cell research? I just wanted to clarify that.
"Blood from the placenta and umbilical cord that are left over after birth is a source of adult stem cells." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cell

Posted by: Mike Ayers at October 5, 2004 07:57 PMHeres how it works. When a baby is born, some of the tissue is scraped off the walls of the uterus. This tissue is used for stem cell research. It is also the same in the case of an abortion.
Posted by: A Persn at October 21, 2004 11:51 AMdesgusting, stem cell research is inhumane and wrong, and you are wrong for promoting it
Posted by: billybobjoe at October 21, 2004 01:48 PMI BELIVE IN KERRY
Posted by: stevenfowler at October 22, 2004 12:23 PMstem cell research is wrong and disgusting. Kerry is an idiot for promoting it. It is murder. Flat out murder!!! You were given the chance to live. That chance should apply to everyone.
Posted by: irishangel at October 25, 2004 05:46 PMI BELIEVE THAT KERRY'S VIEW ON STEM CELL IS WRONG! EVERYBODY IN THIS WORLD HAS THE RIGHT TO LIVE. WHAT HE IS TRYING TO PROMOTE IS MURDER AND I HOPE EVERYBODY IN THIS WORLD REALLY THINKS ABOUT THIS.
Posted by: DENNIS at October 26, 2004 02:46 PMI belive Kerry's veiw on stem cell is wrong! It could kill people and get into other people's blood cells and not stop it from killing I know you might thing its dumb hearing this from an 12 year old!
Posted by: Leslie at October 27, 2004 09:26 AMchill out with the caps there dude, its not murder, the embryo is barely a living thing yet, and it can cure others from dieing. and whats a women having her period then? thats not letting a baby live either,do u think thats murder aswell? even if a women had to have an abortion cuz it would be fata lto her to have the baby,u think the women should die? the embryo has never lived.
and its not stupid to hear from a 12 year old, everyone has their opinions and im only 14

What do you think stem cell research is?
Its taking unused fetuses and using them to grow organs for sick people with diseases. How would you feel if you your mother or father came down with a life threatening disease and the only way to say him or her was to have another liver, and the only liver compatable with his blood type was that of one that was grown through stem cell research, is it murder now?
Posted by: Justin at November 2, 2004 12:02 AMI am completely supportive of freedom of opinion and everyones rights to support their own beliefs. However, it is completely ignorant to claim that Stem Cell research involves murder. If you would put your religious or personal views aside and look at the facts you would realize this. There are three major ways of harvesting stem cells, 1. the above mentioned method by Justin 2. Blood from the birth cord, completely harmless to both mother and child. 3. The use of blastocysts from IVF clinics. The blastocysts that are used for stem cell gathering have no chance of becoming human beings, they have already been slated for distruction by the labs due to the parents withdrawing interest in the in-vitro process. There are hundreds of thousands of these blastocysts that are cultured to 2 weeks and then destroyed each year. The use of even ten percent of those to advance science would be incredible.
The problem is not stem cell research, the problem is the ignorant people in the united states. I myself am catholic but i will not stand for the church havng an impact on a matter of state, and one that could potentially save millions of lives from terminal illness.
Thank you.
Posted by: Geoff at November 8, 2004 12:16 PMFinally Geoff! We get to the truth. People think it's about abortions and moral issues, but its not. And i'm sorry to see so many people are brain washed into thinking that.
Posted by: laura at November 12, 2004 07:20 PMhow do feel about the animals that are being tested on?
stem cell research uses EMBRYOS! not even 5 days old yet.. they are just a clump of cells, even if they werent used, they would either be frozen or discarded in fertility clinics anyway.. why isnt discarding them considered MURDER THEN?! stem cell reseach will help mankind in the end! if the parents agree then why not?!
Posted by: de at June 28, 2005 07:39 AMI would like to comment about women's "periods"...What an idiot! Look up the definition of menstruation....It is the shedding of the uterus lining. There is no destruction of a baby. Women have a period to get rid of this blood not to get rid of embryos or unwanted children. If a woman is pregnant, then, she doesn't have a period. But, an embryo IS a human being. A baby's heart begins beating at six weeks of life. And yes, I do believe that life begins at conception. That child was "created" and has a right to thrive and to become a child not to be scrapped in a laboratory for research purposes! As my brother-in-law answered to someone who said something about "abortion rights". He told the guy "What if your mother had aborted you?"....Very clever reply if you ask me! We have to realize that children are precious gifts not something that we fool around with in a petri dish!
