Federal Marriage Amendment thread

Response to September 30 Federal Marriage Amendment thread

This group of comments is worth my commentary.
First, this site is for the political opinions of all members of 1101 along with the possibility of outside commentary. I requested that you treat each other with respect and civility.

Gay rights is not a silly or sarcastic issue and I would respectfully request that each student posting to this blog remember that their perspective and opinion is ONE perspective.

Furthermore, comments suggesting incest and bestiality are irrelevant and childish and I would encourage all those reading and commenting to this blog remember one fundamental consideration of rhetoric. That being the consideration of Audience.

Many in this country feel that gay civil rights is the equivalent to the civil rights movements of our past (woman and black).

Many ask the questions:

Why shouldn’t one gay partner be able to visit their partner (spouse) in the hospital? Why shouldn’t a partner have the right to joint property purchased during their time together should death or separation occur? Why should one gay parent lose all rights to their adopted children because they aren’t legally married and therefore only one partner was allowed to be named on the adoption papers?

These are serious questions that deserve serious consideration.

When reading the following questions ask yourselves is one question so different from another?

Why should one member of a society be less deserving of rights because of their sexual orientation?

Why should one member of a society be less deserving of rights because of their gender?

Why should one member of a society be less deserving of rights because of their color?

Why should one member of a society be less deserving of rights because of their age?

Why should one member of a society be less deserving of rights because of their handicap?

Make no mistake tax breaks/benefits are a right in this country. Therefore, why shouldn’t gay and lesbian couples have the same rights and benefits as a heterosexual couple? Not all hetero couples produce children therefore the idea that marriage is solely about propagation doesn’t work here.

In short, in the future respect your audience!

This class may contain gay and lesbian members. Likewise, your audience may contain relatives/friends of gays and lesbians. I respect differing opinions on the issues. However, denigrating the issue or another person is not an opinion and need not occur.

First of all I would like to clarify that my comment on the federal marriage amendment wasn't meant as an insult to homosexuals. I realize that homosexuals are no more bad people than the rest of us and agree they should not be unfairly discriminated against. It was meant as a statement of my disapproval of the law that will most likely eventually be passed allowing homosexuals to be married, which I believe is the one area where distinctions should be made.

Second of all I would like to remind you all that I am an ignorant, uninformed, fanatical maniac that couldn't argue well if my life depended on it. If I try to talk about anything other than offical business, I always come across the wrong way and mess everything up. If this blog wasn't graded, I wouldn't even bother with these futile attempts to put my thoughts into words. I should have warned about it earlier but if I mess up and post anything offensive, remember it is just the ravings of a 'fanatical believer'. Try not to let it affect you negatively. In fact, it is probably best if everybody just ignores my posts since I don't have much, if any, facts to support my arguments. Like I said, I'm just doing this for the points, not out of a foolish deception that I can actually debate with anybody.

In any case I will try to keep my posts less offensive from now on, although it is likely I will post something offensive again out of ignorance, if that happens just ignore it.

This is the reason the teacher has created this blog. You can use it as a learning tool. To succeed in today's world it is neccessary to have a level of communication that everybody understands. Even fanatics are required to have reasoning behind their arguments, afterall this is why we have people like brother jed, reverand fallwell and osama bin laden. Argumentation is an integral part not just of the political world but also the lamen world. What this fanatic needs is to put some reasoning behind the argument, not a cry of pity.

OK I think this might be another instance of me saying the wrong thing, getting misunderstood, and making a fool out of myself. I am not looking for pity and I don't expect to recieve any. I was intending on apologizing and stating that I would be more careful in the future. So please don't mistake that first post for a 'cry of pity' to somehow excuse myself. I hope that clears things up.
