The Star Tribune reported on December 13 something very interesting. Republican Abe Lincoln carried nearly exactly the same states in the 1860 election as Democrat John Kerry did in 2004. It is very interesting that there has been a complete opposite shift in politics since the first Republican president.

Posted by: Ceci Wilson at December 13, 2004 09:44 PMNot only do you have to look at the individual states but we have to again look at what each individual stood for. Times have really changed politics and they will forever be changing. Which states were the same??
Posted by: Casey at December 14, 2004 02:23 AMI agree that times have really changed. How can we compare the two presidential canidates when there is so many years between them. So many social, economic, and technological advancements have taken place that make the world today completely different from that of which Lincoln was a part of. Kerry and Lincoln may have gained the same states but that does not say anything about the political shift over the years because there are too many variables that are over looked with that comparison.
Posted by: Dan Kuhl at December 14, 2004 08:05 AMYOu have to look at whats all changed in the past 150 to see way this is the north went from a stong ag. related area to more of and industral backed economy. An party evolve to as times change so it really not that suprising as you might think.
