Last Week's Definition: Leadership is the ability to achieve positive, optimum results having to do with the wellbeing of society due to the influence, dedication, and commitment of one's followers. This ability is derived by one's personal experiences, perspectives, ethical and core values, while also being able to step back and see themselves objectively.

Current Definition: Leadership is the ability to achieve positive, optimum results having to do with the wellbeing of society due to the influence, dedication, and commitment of one's followers. This ability is derived by one's personal experiences, perspectives, ethical and core values, while also being able to step back and see themselves objectively.

Analysis: While I didn't completely disagree with the article How Offline Gatherings Affect Online Communities, I thought that none of what was mentioned should really be included in a definition of leadership. I liked the ideas of online and offline relationships, and how each have their benefits in terms of strengthening relationships in different forms, however I believe that that doesn't define who you are as a leader. (Sessions 2010)

Analysis: I personally was not impressed by this week's reading An Overview of Intentional Change from a Complexity Perspective by Richard E. Boyatzis. I felt that the complexity theory and intentional change theory are both important to leadership in terms of using our behavior, thoughts, feelings, and perceptions for change (Boyatzis 2006), however it shouldn't define what leadership is or based upon.

Analysis: Originally, I disliked the article, Get on the Balcony by Heifetz and Linsky. However, after deeply analyzing it, I realized that I agreed with many of the points made. It makes sense that, in order to be an affective leader, one must be able to take a step back from the situation and see the big picture and how everyone's roles play together. (Heifetz & Linsky 2002) On the other hand, I found the article Identifying Each Person's One Big Thing to be absolutely pointless. To say that if everyone simply focuses on one flaw, they will become better leaders is ludicrous. (Kegan & Lahey 2009) I believe there is not "one big thing" that we have in our lives that prevents us from being at our optimal level. That "one big thing" is what makes us unique, and shapes who we are. If that is changed, so are we, and not for the better.

Analysis: My definition did not alter much this week, except while reading the article A Social Change Model of Leadership Development, I realized that leadership has a lot to do with effecting positive change for the greater good, rather than simply achieving results. (Astin & Astin, 1996) Being honest, I was not impressed with the article Becoming a Servant Leader. I felt that most of the qualities described were unpretentious and one dimensional, and not as "strong" as I believe. (Barbuto & Wheeler, 2007)

This week, my definition did not change. While I enjoyed Get on the Balcony, and understood the concept of stepping back from the situation to see the big picture, I don't believe that ability should be included in a definition (Heifetz, Grashow, Linsky, 2009). I agree that seeing yourself objectively is a strong quality to have in order to succeed as a leader, however I don't believe that should be a defining factor.

Having not realized it until this week's readings, my ethical values and perspectives hold a large impact on my leadership and the reason for the ones I follow. (Paul and Elder, 2006) My definition remained fairly the same this week, however it was necessary for me to include something regarding ethics. Something that I also found valuable but not necessarily belonging in a definition is how sometimes my ethical values can conflict with one another, but not in a way that one is ever "wrong."
