May's YOS at New Era High School in India

May writes

My Year of Service at New Era High School in India has, perhaps, given me more than a year anywhere else would have given me.

To begin with I was somewhat apprehensive of my decision to return to New Era alone. I had first journeyed there with three friends who I had met while serving at the Bahá’í House of Worship in New Delhi. We had all wanted to experience somewhere else in India and wanted to attempt to start a Dance Workshop in a school, as we all had previously experienced and enjoyed it. We chose New Era High School, a Bahá’í inspired residential school in the town of Panchgani, with some 800 students.

Scholarship

Rotary International offers "Ambassadorial Scholarships" for young people who have had at least two years of college or vocational equivalent. These scholarships are NOT for Rotary members or relatives.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Today, the program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with local Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.

See the Rotary website for more information.

Ben Lockwood
This training session will be held in memory of our very dear friend, Ben. Ben was a wonderful, devoted Bahai youth who dedicated much of his life to offering service in different communities around the world, including India, Canada, Eastern Europe and all over the UK. He was very much involved with the work of the Year of Service Desk and helped to inspire many youth to serve. He passed away in a tragic car accident on Christmas Eve 2005. We miss him enourmously.
