Hi all,

Just a reminder, last Tuesday we kind of change our class project from the actual "What Would You Do?" performance, to something more like a survey/questionnaire thing. We're still going to do the scenario of repealing the Equal Pay Law, but instead of acting like canvassers and provoking people, we're going to ask people how they feel about the idea of repealing the law.
So what people are suppose to do for this coming Tuesday is create some options for survey questions out of the arguments that the writers created for the performance.

The main arguments are:
1. Destroying American families and family values, women should be at home with
children: The American Family is a Husband who provides, Wife who takes care of the
home, and obedient children. Women who work are literally tearing the American Family apart, and the result is a whole generation of young people who are morally bankrupt!
2. Cost of women working, cost of maternity leave, for employers, cost of daycare, cost of eliminating sexual harassment, cost of sick days to take care of children: Women at work simply cost more than men at work. Between the cost of maternity leave and sexual harassment lawsuits, working women are costing our economy serious amounts of money! An all-male workforce wouldn't have those problems.
3. Protection from the workplace, sexual harassment, competing for jobs with men, work is stressful, women don't want to leave their children.
4. Biological reasons, emotional disabilities, too emotional, easily stressed out, psychologically painful to leave children: It is physically and emotionally painful for a mother to have to leave her children while she goes to work. Mothers and children are biologically connected and need each other in order for the child to develop properly. It's unfair for women to have to choose between their children and their jobs and this decision has lead to a lot of stress and psychological problems for the mother. For the safety of the mother and her children, she should stay at home and not have to worry about making money for the family.
5. Women don't need money, don't know how to spend money, no reason for them to work:
Money is more important to men because they are the ones making the money for the family; they are the breadwinners. Unequal pay gaps don't exist because men make more than women, but it's because men have different priorities than women. Men care about making money for their family, and women care more about raising their family.

In Wisconsin they actually did repeal the law, which was lead by Sen. Grothman from West Bend. Here are some of the things he's said about it:
"Whatever gaps exist, he insists, stem from women's decision to prioritize childrearing over their careers. "Take a hypothetical husband and wife who are both lawyers," he says. "But the husband is working 50 or 60 hours a week, going all out, making 200 grand a year. The woman takes time off, raises kids, is not go go go. Now they're 50 years old. The husband is making 200 grand a year, the woman is making 40 grand a year. It wasn't discrimination. There was a different sense of urgency in each person." Sen. Grothman
"You could argue that money is more important for men. I think a guy in their first job, maybe because they expect to be a breadwinner someday, may be a little more money-conscious. To attribute everything to a so-called bias in the workplace is just not true." Sen. Grothman

You can use these points to help make your questions, or think of other ones. We will pick the best ones in class and go from there.

Thanks!
